Boy, 2021 is already shaping up to be even weirder than 2020. And you know what that means: memes abound. After all, as the old adage goes, “The worse things are, the better the memes are.”
Take the Bernie Sanders inauguration meme, for example. The meme cycle hit the arts and crafts community within days, and now a crochet Bernie doll has sold for over $20,000.
So, as we all know, Senator Bernie Sanders became a meme on Inauguration Day.
The day was meant to be about President B***n, but I think it’s safe to say Michelle Obama’s outfit and Bernie Sanders’ general countenance stole the show.
As the meme rapidly spread, crafters saw an opportunity and seized it.
No one nailed the Bernie meme crafts like Tobey Perales King.
King, a crocheter and owner of Etsy shop TobeyTimeCrochet, previously created a Bernie doll crochet pattern. She quickly modified to for the meme potential, and her post blew up on social media.
In the spirit of giving back, Tobey listed the original doll on eBay.
All proceeds from the sale of the doll would go to Meals on Wheels. She listed Bernie for $5.50 and then waited.
Well, after 160+ bids, the doll wound up selling for $20,300!
Don’t worry if you missed out on the doll…
Because you can crochet your own using Tobey’s pattern! Hit up her Etsy here and get to making your own little meme moment.
Welcome to 2021, it’s gonna be a weird one!
