Texas Top Gun fans were given a real treat this past weekend at the Austin Food and Wine Alliance and Rolling Roadshow with an outdoor screening of the cult classic film, with a special appearance by Val Kilmer himself!
The actor will appear opposite Tom Cruise in the highly anticipated sequel “Top Gun: Maverick”— a film over 34 years in the making.
Kilmer made a special appearance at the Austin Food and Wine Alliance and Rolling Roadshow to introduce the outdoor screening of the film.
Barry Tubb joined his longtime friend on stage and the crowd, understandably, went wild!
Iceman and Wolfman forever!
The actor met with fans, took photos and signed autographs after the viewing— much to their delight!
Kilmer’s public appearances have been few and far between since his battle with throat cancer.
In a profile for the Hollywood Reporter back in April 2017, it was revealed Kilmer had been fighting a two-year battle with throat cancer, and he’d undergone a procedure on his trachea.
Recently, Kilmer launched The TwainMania Foundation.
The organization “uses art and education to inspire people of all backgrounds and ages to learn what it means to be an American” through the life and legacy of author Mark Twain.
Kilmer’s apperance comes only a few weeks after Tom Cruise surprised fans with a screening of the “Top Gun: Maverick” trailer at Comic-Con.
True “Top Gun” fans will remember when Kilmer literally “jumped the gun” on news of a sequel alllll the way back in 2015.
Kilmer had revealed on Facebook that he was offered a role in Top Gun: Maverick. ‘Offered #topgun2 — not often you get to say ‘yes’ without reading the script…’ he said .
He continued, “This is a long way off so calm down. This has been talked about for a long long time and being offered a role is very different from doing a role.”
‘I jumped the gun with my post. I jumped the topgun… an innocent mistake.”
He clarified, “It was just such a wonderful phone call with my agent.”
Well, the wait will soon be over!
“Top Gun: Maverick” is set to hit theaters in June 2020.
