An Indian couple has recently announced the controversial names they’ve chosen for their newborn twins.
According to the Press Trust of India news agency, Vinay Verma and his wife, Preeti, have dubbed their babies, who were born during lockdown, Corona and Covid.
And yes, they’re 100 percent serious.
The healthy babies, a boy, (Covid) and a girl, (Corona), were born on March 27.
As 27-year-old Preeti explained, she and her husband decided to give the newborns their… unique names after staff at B.R. Ambedkar Memorial Hospital in Raipur started using them for the babies.
“The delivery happened after facing several difficulties, and therefore, me and my husband wanted to make the day memorable,” she told the news agency . “We finally decided to name them after the pandemic.”
Preeti and Vinay hope their babies’ names might help reduce people’s fears during this difficult time in the world.
“We wished to ease the anxiety and fear associated with these words and also make the occasion memorable,” she explained.
However, the couple said they might change their decision later, saying the babies have been named Covid and Corona “for now.”
The lockdown in India began on March 24, just days before Corona and Covid were born.
As of writing, the country has reported 3,082 confirmed cases, with 86 total deaths and 229 patients who have totally recovered.
Doctors in India have recently warned that the country must prepare to face an “onslaught” of cases after Mumbai’s Dharavi slum, one of Asia’s largest slums, reported its first coronavirus death this week.
