It’s kind of funny how some pictures can be so interesting on their own, and yet knowing the backstory can still make them so much better. Don’t you just love a good backstory.
Well, when it comes to this list, you’re going to get a lot of backstory. Not that any of these pictures need them; they’re pretty cool on their own.
“This is Sunflower. She usually goes by Sunny but this feels like a proper-name-type-of-portrait.”

I don’t know about you, but Sunflower looks like one serious dog. I’m sure she’s a lot more goofy when she isn’t posing for the camera though, especially since she usually goes by Sunny.
“Zoomed into this photo I took of dew drops on a succulent. I thought it looked cool.”

That’s so cool. Even without knowing exactly what I’m looking at, it’s really cool. But knowing that it’s a bunch of water droplets on a succulent plant makes it so much more amazing!
“Every year I add a little more. I know lights are common but it brings joy to my neighborhood.”

To be honest, I love when people put lights up at this time of year. The nights are so long and dark, and lights make the dark seem a little less, well, dark. It’s nice to know other people find joy in them, too.
“Beavers were recently reintroduced to Scotland and they’ve been gnawing away at the trees.”

Beavers are somehow such a distinctly Canadian thing, but I guess they’re a distinctly Scottish thing now, too. That’s great and all, but it’ll be interesting to see what happens to the woods and waterways in Scotland now.
“Spent 7 hours at the dunes in Death Valley to find untouched sand. Here is the result.”

This is such an awesome picture! I’ve never been to a desert before, so I had no idea you could just find perfectly smooth parts like this. It almost makes you forget how hot and dry they are.
“Light snowfall made these lights appear as beams. Some even appeared to be flashing green.”

Is this neighborhood being terrorized by aliens? No, even though it kind of looks like it is. But it’s just the way the snow is falling. And the way the lights are shining.
“Took a photo with two of my 3 cats and this happened, I think she is enjoying being on my shoulders.”

Don’t you just love it when your cats do something unexpectedly adorable? Even if it is slightly uncomfortable.
I’m not gonna lie, I half expected the caption to tell us that there’s a secret third cat somewhere in the picture.
“My dog Ivy waiting patiently as I fix her toy parrot, now with less stuffing and more crinkle sounds.”

Meanwhile, Ivy is practicing the most patience I’ve ever seen in a dog. And it’ll be worth it, because her toy parrot is going to be so much better once it’s all fixed.
“Quite the sight in Anchorage, Alaska. This was seen right next to Ted Stevens International Airport.”

Oh yeah, no big deal. Just a pair of moose fighting it out in front of an international airport. I guess there aren’t very many airports in the world where you could see this kind of thing.
“The Mona Lisa like you’ve never seen her before – this is the reverse side of the famous painting.”

Talk about a literal backstory. Or, I guess it’s just the back of a painting. But still, it’s the back of one of the most famous paintings in the world, which automatically makes it really special.
“I found a diamond in my shoe while working out…”

To be more specific, that’s a diamond earring. Also, there’s a good chance it isn’t a real diamond, especially if someone lost it in a gym. Like, would you be wearing expensive jewelry to work out?
“Climbing a dune in Indiana, you can see shorter buildings in Chicago the higher you go.”

It’s kind of amazing how so many cities are right along the Great Lakes. If you’re by the shore at the right time of day, you can see whatever city is on the other side, and it’s just so otherworldly.
This is also a great example of using perspective to prove the Earth is round.
“This ornament on my Christmas tree that was made by serial killer Judy Buenoano.”

There’s a lot more to the story, too. OP’s grandmother used to get her nails done by Buenoano:
“Every time my Grandma went to get her nails done the lady would personally see to it that she was the one to do her nails. One Christmas, Judy gifted my Grandma a box of hand painted ornaments. One of which is pictured above.”
“This unique way a hotel chose to block a urinal to enforce social distancing in the men’s room in the lobby…”

And here I was thinking this was just a clever way for this hotel to decorate its bathroom. I mean, either way, it’s not like having more plants around is going to hurt anyone.
“This gas station bathroom I used had a bidet attachment (no, I didn’t try it).”

Well, that’s definitely a choice for a public bathroom. And not just any kind of public bathroom, but one found at a gas station. Good call on OP’s part for not trying it out.
“As a teacher, these little notes mean the world to us.”

A lot of the time, I think about how tough it must be to be a teacher. But when you have amazing students like this who value your lessons, it must make it all worthwhile.
“Candle wax reclaimed from the candles my partner burned over the course of the past year. Garlic for scale.”

That’s… a lot of candles. You could probably stick a wick in all that wax and just use it as a new candle. In fact, that’s exactly what this person should do (not with the garlic, though).
“Getting fist bumps from the scuba diver cleaning the tank.”

I’m pretty sure that scuba diver isn’t part of the aquarium display, but it’s cool that this kid got to have such a fun experience anyway. It’s so nice to see heartwarming things like this!
“This cat with orange, grey and black fur gave birth to 3 kittens each of whom took one of its colors: 1 orange, 1 grey, 1 black.”

It’s hard to believe that all of those kittens have the same mom. But that just goes to show you that cat genetics are… really weird. This is just another one of those things that makes you question whether or not cats are actually from this planet.
“Women from Bengal,India. Distributes leftover food from his brother’s wedding at Bengal railway station.”

This is another one of those pictures that just really pulls at your heartstrings. Like, why waste all of that food, when you could just be sharing it with others? A little bit of kindness goes a long way.
