A TikTok influencer, an American man who recently moved to the U.K., is causing a stir online with his latest video. In it, he humorously declares that certain British words are so bizarre, they “should be illegal.”
From quirky culinary terms to expressions that make no sense to him, he aims some of the U.K.’s most beloved words with a playful and bewildered critique. And, of course, the British public was quick to respond.
The first word he decided to challenge?
“B****y.” This word, which seems to pepper almost every British sentence, has him completely stumped.
He jokes that he can’t fathom why Brits use it so frequently. “Every time I hear ‘b****y h**l,’ I think of actual blood,” he remarks, sticking out his t*********a dramatic gagging gesture. To him, the word is far too graphic for everyday use.
Next, he turns his attention to “b******s.”
With a bemused look, he confesses he has no idea what it means, but he has figured out it’s often shouted when someone is upset.
He shares a memory of his first encounter with the word: “I heard someone shout, ‘Oh, b******s!’ and I genuinely thought something was going down!” His earnest confusion makes for a hilarious moment as he questions whether the Brits use these expressions just to baffle newcomers.
Then comes the word “dribble,” which he quickly labels as “the grossest” of them all.
He’s bewildered that the British use “dribble” to describe drooling, a term that, to him, sounds far too vivid and unpleasant. “It just doesn’t sit well with me,” he admits, scrunching his face in mock horror.
“When I hear someone say ‘a little dribble,’ I imagine someone with, like, drool just hanging from their mouth. Why would you say that?”
The influencer then dives into his confusion over “bubble and squeak.”
He admits he still doesn’t know what this mysterious dish actually is, but the name alone is enough to make him wary. “I don’t want to be at dinner, and someone puts ‘bubble and squeak’ on my plate!” he laughs.
I admit the name sounds like something you’d find in a children’s book rather than on a menu, and his audience can’t help but laugh along.
Finally, he tackles the word “k**b,” a term he understands is used as an insult.
He shakes his head and smiles, saying, “This can’t be real!” whenever he hears someone called a “k**b.”
He finds it both confusing and oddly endearing that the British would use a word like “k**b” in this way, and his genuine bafflement shines through.
The reaction to his video was immediate, with plenty of Brits jumping in to set the record straight.
One viewer clarified, “It’s ‘b******s,’ and it means testicles, just for clarity.” The influencer responded, “Thanks, brotha, I genuinely didn’t know.” His followers got a good laugh from his openness and willingness to learn, even if it’s about British slang for body parts.
The discussion heated up further when people began to explain the peculiar term “bubble and squeak.”
Many viewers described it as a simple yet beloved dish made from leftover vegetables, typically fried and served for breakfast. “It’s just leftovers from a roast, fried up for breakfast,” one user explained. Another elaborated, “We call it ‘bubble and squeak’ because it makes that noise when cooking.”
“Bubble and squeak is amazing! Don’t knock it till you try it!” said one commenter. Another urged, “You have to film yourself trying bubble and squeak! It’s a rite of passage for anyone living in the U.K.!” The influencer’s bemused expression in response to these comments only added to the fun.
Some commenters offered him friendly advice.
“You should learn what they mean and embrace them!” encouraged one, while another joked, “You could make them work to your advantage.” Imagine how impressed people would be when he uses ‘b******s’ correctly!
Yet, not everyone was so accommodating; one particularly exasperated user suggested, “Maybe move back to the USA if you can’t appreciate British culture!”
The influencer’s video has clearly sparked a conversation.
While some viewers defended their linguistic quirks others poked fun at his confusion. One thing is for certain: his playful critique has given many a good laugh and perhaps even made a few Brits see their language in a new light. Whether he eventually embraces British slang or not, he has certainly found a way to keep his followers entertained!
