Thanks to TikTok, we now have a new (to us) hack that will save you time and frustration when putting up your Christmas tree. Work smart, not hard.

The hack was originated by Clare Hooper on TikTok.
She’s a lifestyle blogger who really loves Christmas. She posted a TikTok explaining that coiling the lights around your tree is not the way to go — and neither is hanging your lights horizontally.
She’s a former tree decorator.
So if anyone knows how to decorate a tree, it’s her. What you want to do is take your lights and start at the top of the tree, and then…well.
Apparently, you’re supposed to hanging your lights vertically.
Zig-zag them up and down your tree, covering the entire thing in lights. I’m a horizontal zig-zagger, so this hack blew my mind.
She said it saves you a lot of time.
Goodbye, trying to pass lights around the back of the tree. She also pointed out that this makes removal very easy, which is a lifesaver for when Christmas is over and the tree is still up mid-January.
Her TikTok quickly went viral.
As of publishing, it has over 1.2 million views. People absolutely love the hack for its ease, especially for those who don’t have a lot of time to decorate the tree.
Other TikTokkers decided to try it out.
As it turned out, it’s an absolutely brilliant hack that looks good, too! TikTokker @lizlovery decided to go all around her tree with her lights, since the hack seriously takes no time at all.
She also thought it was easy to remove.
If you break a string or a bulb goes out, it’s way easier to disconnect that string from the main tree and replace it. Seriously, this hack is a lifesaver.
Her TikTok popped off.
It has over 12 million views, dwarfing Clare’s initial TikTok. The people like a good Christmas tree hack! Most comments praised the ingenuity and the quickness of the assembly.
Some people were super bummed they didn’t see the hack sooner.
I am one of those people, tbh. My tree is pre-lit, but I love adding in extra lights for more sparkle. This would have saved me at least one argument with a pack of lights!
One user pointed out a potential flaw.
Okay, so note to self: when zig-zagging lights, stagger the height of the zigs (and the zags) in order to avoid everything looking overloaded. Maybe tuck some of the strings into the tree, too.
One person found a silver lining to their tree plight.
As a cat owner with a cat that has insisted on chewing on the tree this year, I can attest to the struggle of trying to keep a tree up and decorated with cats.
