Varys has been, and will always be, a snake. What’s worse is that we can’t even be mad about it, because he has been clear about his position since day one on the show.
Despite that, fans should have been paying closer attention to his character development.
Spoilers for Game Of Thrones episode 4 of season 8 ahead!
Varys always made it clear that he would choose the realm over anything else.

Admit it, you weren’t that surprised when Varys spoke to Tyrion about betraying Dany.
He has made it clear since the beginning of the show that his place is not with whoever sits on the throne, but with the realm itself.
Dany is right to be so weary of those around her.

Throughout the episode, Dany is going through severe emotional turmoil, wondering who is on her side and who isn’t.
It’s really been a lot for her to try and handle.

Between Jon betraying her and Varys and Tyrion plotting behind her back, we can’t really blame her for questioning everyone and everything around her.
The Varys prophecy actually dates as far back as season 2.

Beyond Varys being very clear about who he is, there was actually a prophecy that foretold this moment.
Back in season 2, there was a woman in Qarth who warned Ser Jorah that Daenerys was in deep danger.

Book lovers everywhere know that the woman is actually Quaithe, who follows Dany’s journey throughout the books.
There’s some debate over who the prophecy’s actually about.

She had mentioned to Jorah that Dany must “beware the perfumed seneschal”.
In the books, Varys is often wearing heavy perfume. Seneschal is another word for an advisor, which makes Tyrion another, albeit, less likely option.

Who will betray Dany in the end?
Varys isn’t trying to hide his feelings on Dany’s war tactics.

In his defense, Varys made it very clear that he would always be vocal with Dany about her mistakes, and even in the last episode, he definitely was.
He told her she was making a mistake, but she did not listen to his words of wisdom.

“Do not destroy the city you came to save. Do not become what you have struggled to defeat,” he said.
Because Dany isn’t listening, Varys will seek outside help.

How exactly will Varys betray Dany? There are a few guesses, but one comes from the novel itself.
One potential twist could be that Varys will convince the Golden Company to help him overthrow Cersei.

They will help him because Varys will promise a Targaryen leader, except the leader won’t be Dany. He will suggest Jon.
Tyrion is the last one who has to make a decision.

The other question is whether or not Varys is going to convince Tyrion to help him.
Right now, Tyrion is definitely at a crossroads. He loves and respects Dany but also is afraid of what she’s capable of doing.
This leaves Dany alone.

So, to some fans, Dany may be really losing her mind, but honestly, can you blame her?
She is on the verge of losing everything, and she has already lost so much. Varys, however, doesn’t seem to care.
What do you think? Will Varys betray Dany to seat Jon on the iron throne, or maybe he’ll say screw everyone and take it for himself?
Varys, however, doesn’t seem to care.

But he really should. The question he needs to ask himself is if he does betray Daenerys, will it even work out the way he thinks it might?
