When we describe something as unlikely , we’re not necessarily ruling out the possibility of it happening. It’s just, well, unlikely to happen.
Sometimes, we’ll see something happen that truly defies the odds . It may never happen again, but it happened once — and we have the pics to prove it. Good thing, too, because we might not have believed it otherwise.
“This house…”

I’m not sure what kind of natural disaster befell this community — a fire, maybe? All I know is that this entire neighborhood has been razed to the ground save for one incredibly lucky house in the middle of the chaos.
“Ice cream drip.”

If you get an ice cream cone, drips are hardly unlikely. They’re very likely, in fact. What is unlikely is capturing the drip on camera like this. It looks so cartoonishly perfect that it almost seems Photoshopped.
“Almost died this morning on the highway. Bounced from the left lane up in the air and impaled my windshield.”

As someone who loves driving, this kind of photo gives me pause. There are all kinds of hazards on the roads, including stuff you can’t possibly prepare for.
“My mom and I ended up with the exact same hand in a game of crib, mine were black, hers were red.”

The odds of this happening are long. I’d calculate them myself, but, y’know, math is hard and all that. Let’s just call it one in a million.
“Two hummingbirds landed at the same time on my rods while out fishing!”

If something like this happens when you’re out fishing, you just kind of know that it’s going to be a good day. After all, the hummingbirds blessed you.
“This drunk driver crashed into a Report Impaired Drivers sign in Canada.”

I like to think that this driver saw the error of their ways and was trying to make out the number on the sign so they could report themselves.
“Flipped a kayak in sea cave and lost a Go-Pro style camera. 2.5 years later I get an email saying that it had been found and the footage was intact.”

It must be a weird feeling to see the footage that you assumed you’d lost forever.
“Sign still works.”

I can picture the general manager of this Home Depot putting in a call to order more lightbulbs for the sign, then going outside to look at it, then deciding that the sign doesn’t need those lights after all.
“This picture was the result of perfect timing with the lightning.”

It doesn’t take long to snap a photograph, but it does take a small amount of time. Sometimes, during that small window, something happens to make the pic truly unique.
“I accidently captured my bumper coming off when my brother was hitting a puddle!”

It isn’t often that you capture on camera the precise moment that your car needed a hefty repair bill. Maybe this guy’s brother will pay for it, since he was driving.
“My peanut M&M and cat treats come in the exact same container.”

I love peanut M&Ms as much as the next guy, but this pic kind of makes me want them a little bit less. Even a different lid color would help somewhat.
“Someone parked underground with their sunroof open and a pipe burst above them.”

If you park underground, under the safety of a protective ceiling, and your car still gets soaked, it’s a sign that things just aren’t going to go your way this day.
“Dragonfly landing on the nose of a water snake.”

I wonder if these two are friends, foes or totally indifferent to each other. In any event, big props to the photographer for capturing such a great pic of this chance encounter in the wild.
“My mom took a picture of the sunset and a dolphin jumped in the shot.”

There’s something about the dolphin’s presence in this photo that elevates it from merely being a nice pic of a sunset to the kind of kitschy art you’d see at the secondhand store.
“Snorkeller finds lost wedding ring wrapped around a mullet fish off of Norfolk Island.”

That wedding ring can be returned to its rightful owner. That is, of course, assuming that the mullet fish is going to be willing to give up its bling.
“I took a selfie at the exact same time someone took a flash photo and I captured the flash moving.”

This photo literally shows something moving at light speed. A fraction of a second earlier or later and you wouldn’t see it.
“Take a photo of your lunch.”

If you’re trying to eat in a seagull-infested area, don’t take a pic of your food. Keep an iron grip on your food, eat it quickly, and then make your escape. You have been warned. Mind you, if it’s a raptor and not a gull, then your food is gone. Talons are very persuasive like that.
“Cat sitting the exact place.”

The ING logo shows a majestic lion, not a stray cat, but it’s still pretty uncanny how much the cat’s pose and positioning mirrors the lion in the logo. I think the cat knows exactly what it’s doing.
“A pike frozen in the ice halfway through eating another fish.”

It’s wild to think that this pike was so focused on filling its belly that it didn’t realize it was slowly freezing in place. Now the moment has been captured for posterity.
“Snow fell in Rostov today. Indescribably lucky two car owners on Mechnikov Street.”

I’ve seen fallen trees miss cars with literal inches to spare, but I’m not sure if there’s even one inch between this tree and either car. They were spared by the slimmest of margins.
