Earlier today, a Delta Airlines flight had to crash land at Toronto Pearson International Airport. The plane was coming from Minneapolis and, well, it ended up flipping over on the runway because of the snowstorm.Â
It was a pretty wild scene. Some people got hurt, but thankfully no one’s seriously injured. It’s just another reminder of how unexpected things can be in aviation.
This all comes right after a pretty scary incident in Washington, DC, involving a plane and a military helicopter earlier this year.
Emergency services quickly responded to the crash
The airport has said in a statement:Â “Toronto Pearson is aware of an incident upon landing involving a Delta Airlines plane arriving from Minneapolis. Emergency teams are responding. All passengers and crew are accounted for.”
The union confirmed the safety of the flight crew
AFA-CWA, the association of flight attendants, wrote on X: “Our union is responding to an incident in Toronto with Delta Air Lines Endeavor Flight 4819. AFA crew were working this flight. Reports are there are no fatalities.Â
“Please do not speculate on this incident as everyone works to gather information and support those involved.”
Police reassured the public about passenger safety
Constable Sarah Patten of the Peel Regional Police in Ontario mentioned, “It is my understanding that most of the passengers are out and unharmed but we’re still trying to make sure so we’re still on scene investigating.”
Footage showed the plane flipped on its side on a snowy runway
After the crash, a bunch of videos started popping up online. In one of them, the plane can be seen flipped over on its side, stuck on a runway covered in snow. It’s hard to look at, but thankfully it seems like everyone got out okay.
At least eight passengers were reported injured
From what local media are saying, at least eight people got hurt during the crash. We don’t know yet how bad their injuries are, but it’s good to know that no one’s in critical condition.
There were about 80 people on the plane, so luckily it wasn’t worse.
Weather conditions contributed to the runway challenges
Toronto had been hit with around nine inches of snow over the weekend. The New York Post mentioned that officials had to clear the runway on Sunday (February 16) so it could be ready for use the following Monday (February 17).
Those snowy conditions likely made things much worse for the plane’s landing.
This crash occurred shortly after a similar tragedy in Washington, DC
Just a few weeks ago, something similar happened in Washington, DC. A plane from American Airlines collided with a Black Hawk military helicopter as it was coming in for a landing at Ronald Reagan National Airport on January 29.
It’s a horrible tragedy, with all 64 people on the plane and three in the helicopter losing their lives.
The collision between the helicopter and American Airlines plane was fatal
That crash was so heartbreaking. The American Airlines flight and the helicopter both ended up in the Potomac River. What started as a search for survivors quickly turned into a recovery mission, and sadly, they found no one alive.
Thankfully, this time around, no lives were lost, but this crash is a stark reminder of how quickly things can go wrong. Let’s hope it’s the last of its kind!
