Who here is a fan of Tim Burton? He’s my favorite director by far. I love all the crazy gothic characters he creates in his movies. He sets the scene of his fantasy lands so perfectly.
If you’re looking for something unique to add to your Tim Burton-inspired house decor, look no further than this special houseplant. It looks totally spooktacular ha, ha!
It’s called Cryptanthus ‘Black Mystic’ and it looks super cool.
Honestly, it actually reminds me of a scene right out of Beetlejuice where he changes into this weird snake-like creature. Do you remember that part? This plant is totally out-of-this-world awesome.
This interesting and unusual plant is also commonly known as ‘Earth Star.’
It’s a small, terrestrial bromeliad. The bromeliaceae is a family of monocot flowering plants with about 3590 known species. They’re native to the tropical Americas and West Africa.
This cool-looking baby will grow to a maximum of 20 centimeters high and it does prefer a moderate or diffuse light setting.
Unlike most of the other bromeliads, this plant actually grows in soil. I can’t get over how awesome it looks.
The best time to plant this houseplant is in March.
You should use a five or six-inch pot that would provide adequate space for the plant to grow. And it’s advisable to use plastic planters so it can retain its moisture easily.
The ‘Black Mystic’ will thrive in any soil that retains a lot of moisture.
So it’s best to get a special potting soil from a nursery or a garden center. You can also mix your own using sand, peat, and perlite.
This plant needs moderate sunlight, so make sure it gets at least some sun.
But on the other hand, don’t leave it out in the direct sun. Too much direct sun can actually cause bleached or sunburned areas on the plant’s leaves

These pretty plants can survive in a variety of temperatures.
But they will thrive in temperatures between 60-85 degrees Fahrenheit. While they’re ideal to grow indoors, they can be grown outdoors in milder climates. Or, you can just move them indoors once the weather cools down.
If the plant is healthy it will produce ‘pups’ (AKA baby plants you can propagate).
They’re the exact replicas of the mother plant and can be removed and then potted in their own growing medium. The one downside of these plants is that they only bloom once and then die. But, if you propagate the pups, you’ll always have more plants in your collection!
I gotta say I’m totally psyched about the unique look of this plant.
