Here’s a scenario for you:
You’re in line for the cash register at a really expensive boutique, and you overhear the young girl in front of you tell her friend she’s going to be buying a new pair of pricey shoes using her dad’s credit card. What do you do?
For most us, the answer would probably be something along the lines of “absolutely nothing” because hey, that’s none of our business. Good luck, kid.
But for one woman, this exact situation posed such a pressing, moral dilemma that she simply couldn’t bite her tongue and just had to do something about it.

The unnamed woman recently shared her story online in an effort to try and drum up some support.
Posted in the subreddit r/AmITheAsshole, she began by explaining her husband has already heard the whole story and firmly believes that she was, in fact, the asshole in this situation.
But before she relents and accepts this title, she wants to check with the rest of the internet to see what everyone else thinks, too.
While shopping at Bloomingdale’s one day, the woman overheard a conversation between two teenage girls who were also browsing the merchandise.
The pair were discussing the hefty price of a pair of boots and when one admitted she was going to buy them anyway, the other demanded to know how she could ever afford such an expensive purchase.
That was when her friend admitted it wouldn’t be *her* money that would pay for the boots; it would be her dad’s.
As it turns out, the young girl had her dad’s credit card, and was planning on charging her new footwear to his account.
Upon hearing this, the woman said she instantly became invested in the situation “because THAT’S NOT HER CARD.”
“I’ve told my son multiple times he’s never allowed to use my card,” she explained in the post , “so I’m interested to see how this girl thinks she’s going to get away with fraud.”
The woman ended up in line at the register right behind the young girl while she was in the middle of checking out her new boots.
Up until this moment, the woman had remained quiet on the matter, but it was when she saw just how much the boots were going to cost the girl’s dad that she decided she simply couldn’t stand by and do nothing .
From the sounds of it, the price of these boots matched what most people pay in rent.
“I see her total hit well over four digits,” she recalled. “The girl is about to swipe her card when I decide that I can’t let her get away with something like this and someone has to parent this kid if no one else will.”
That was when this woman boldly stepped out of line (figuratively and literally) to foil the teen’s dastardly boot plot.
“I tell cashier that isn’t her card but her father’s and I’m not sure she has permission,” she revealed in her post.
She went on to say the teenage girl tried to insist her dad had given her his card to use so he could earn points, but the cashier said she wasn’t allowed to charge the card knowing it wasn’t hers.
The young girl even attempted to show her ID to prove the surname matched that of the one on the card, but the woman ever-so-helpfully chimed in that “it’s still fraud.”
“[The] girl says it’s not fraud because she has permission and tells me to mind my own business,” she recalled online. “I tell her that it is my business that she’s doing something illegal she needs to pay with her own card or I call the cops.”
After battling it out with a teenager, the woman was satisfied when the girl finally relented and paid for the boots with her own card.
But after relaying the tale of her Bloomingdale’s victory to her husband, only for him to tell her she was in the wrong, the woman has started questioning whether or not she really is the hero of this story.
So she posed the question to Reddit: was she the asshole?
The answer was a simple and almost entirely unanimous “yes.”
“Did it ever occur to you that she was telling the truth and her dad had given her his credit card?” this user implored. “Mind your own business.”
Another person added, “I will never understand the sense of entitlement that comes from thinking you can just insert yourself into other [people’s] affairs when you don’t know them and it doesn’t impact you whatsoever.”
There were a few comments that suggested perhaps the teen took her dad’s card without asking, but other people were quick to shut those users down.
“Imagine thinking it’s out of the ordinary for a father (clearly wealthy if he has a rewards card to f***ing Bloomingdale’s) to let his teenage daughter borrow his credit cards to go shopping,” this person wrote.
Others pointed out that even if this were the case, it still didn’t make it the woman’s business. It was a family matter that she inserted herself into.
