In the face of the rapid depletion of the earth’s ozone layer, extinction of animal species, and numerous environmental changes, it’s important to keep animals and plants as safe as possible.
This is what the authorities of Scarborough did on New Year’s Eve and led this Arctic mammal safely on what seemed like its journey to its forever home.
Keep reading for the details.
Pulling All The Stops

Council leader Steve Siddons abruptly called off the New Year’s Eve fireworks display in order to protect a newly discovered walrus in Scarborough. Authorities believed the fireworks could cause distress to this animal.
Not An Easy Decision

Siddons expressed his disappointment but it was important to prioritize the safety of the sea animal which attracted a massive crowd as it arrived on Saturday. The decision to cancel the display was based on the urgent advice of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue.
Earlier Spotted In Hampshire

The walrus now named Thor had earlier been spotted in Hampshire which prompted warnings for the public to avoid harming it. British Divers Marine Life Rescue paid close attention to the large marine and concluded it stopped because it needed to gather strength for the rest of its journey.
Summer’s Day In The Resort
A barrier was placed around the animal as it arrived at the Scarborough harbor and attracted sightseers who wanted to catch a glimpse. A resident of the area described the trooping crowd as a summer’s day in the popular seaside harbor.
Word From BDMLR Charity

Emily Mayman reported the animal was last seen making its way to the sea at about 17:00 GMT on Saturday and they’ve not heard any report of his sighting since then.
“We’ve not had any more reports of his sighting pretty much since he went out of the harbor.”
Monitoring The Coastline

In their bid to keep tabs on Thor and make sure he makes it safely to his final habitat, Mayman revealed that the surrounding coastline was being monitored just in case he makes an appearance and also stated that he could be in search of a feeding spot.
“It could be that he could turn up anywhere.”
Gratitude To The People Of Scarborough

Mayman also expressed gratitude to the people of Scarborough, the local authorities, and wildlife groups for helping to keep Thor out of harm’s way.
“Everybody just did the right thing and we can’t be grateful enough for it.”
And most importantly calling off the fireworks upon request.
“It’s hugely appreciated that they considered his welfare above anything else and I know it has been massively received right across the globe.”
Quite The Traveler

Thor surely loves adventure as he had been spotted in The Netherlands, Dieppe, and Brittany in the past weeks.
Walrus Weight And Life Span

The large marine mammals can weigh up to two tons when fully grown and measure about 9-12 feet (2.7-3.6 meters) long. They can also live for about 40 years in the sea.
