Add one more reason to the list of why sex is awesome: it helps get rid of congestion.
A study has concluded that good sex — not just any sex, but the kind good enough to produce an orgasm — is just as effective as over-the-counter decongestants.

Everyone knows it’s good exercise.

For a lot of people, sex is the only kind of exercise to really get excited about.
It’s hard to pin down exactly how many calories it burns because there are so many variables, but most estimates say it burns three to four calories a minute.
It releases endorphins, as well.

Endorphins are the reason you’re more likely to feel energized after a good roll in the hay. It produces endorphins and oxytocin, making for a feel-good sensation that also helps fight off anxiety and depression.
What’s this about a decongestant effect?
A team of German researchers released their findings in the Ear, Nose & Throat Journal.
The long and short of it is that nasal breathing is significantly improved after orgasm. While nasal spray can help prolong decongestant effects, the orgasm alone has a positive effect as well.
How long does it last?

The decongestant effect has impressive staying power: participants felt less congested up to an hour after orgasm. As noted, nasal spray has a longer-term effect, but sex alone was found to be just as effective during these initial 60 minutes.
Can sex cure the common cold?
The study is a small one, comprising only 36 participants, and the researchers note that accurate data collection can be a challenge after a couple gets it on.
It would be interesting to see if, ahem, self-love had the same effects, but researchers haven’t explored this avenue yet.
It’s built on old hunches.

The researchers note that “A physiological connection between the nose and the genitals has long been proposed,” citing theories going back to the 19th century, including a cameo from Freud himself.
It’s also known that physical exertion, such as sex, can help clear out the nasal cavity.
What do you think?

Most of us probably don’t need an extra reason to jump into the sack with a partner, but this data is certainly compelling.
