Once we put our trash out on the curb, it’s hard not to consider its contents out of our lives. And unless a strong wind or a raccoon knocks over the can and makes our trash our problem once again, we’re usually right to do so.
But once these things leave our lives, they enter the lives of those tasked to take them away for us. And there’s a chance that those sanitation workers know more about what we’re throwing away than we might realize.
But while that may be an uncomfortable thought, it was downright lifesaving when one New York City resident decided to treat a living being as trash.
In the blink of an eye, two sanitation workers became heroes when they were on their route in Queens, New York.
As ABC 11 reported , William Montero and John Kase were about to throw a garbage bag into the hopper of their truck when they noticed a meowing sound coming from it.

Sure enough, they opened the bag only to discover a single 10-month kitten inside.
As Montero told ABC11, “I couldn’t believe it, I’m like who would do this — put the cat in a bag, there are so many different outlets to help a cat with a better life than to put him in a bag and tie it up and put tape around the top — I can’t help but think it was intentional.”
According to Bored Panda , the workers then removed some debris from the cat’s eye before one of them held it to his chest to help the kitten calm down.
Since both men had rescue animals of their own, they were not in a position to adopt the foundling kitten.
Still, they figured it was best to give the kitten a name and while Bored Panda reported that they were apparently debating between Rusty and Hopper, Hopper won out in the end.
After a call to their supervisor, Montero and Kase brought Hopper to the vet, where ABC 11 confirmed he was treated for eye and respiratory infections.
Since Hopper’s harrowing day, he’s been placed in foster care through Noah’s Ark Animal Rescue while he waits for something more permanent.
According to Bored Panda, his condition has improved in the meantime and Kase and Montero showed up to the animal rescue with a cat bed and some other supplies as a parting gift.
It remains unclear who threw Hopper out in the first place.
