You may be familiar with doomsday preppers —people who, well, prepare themselves with everything they need to survive an anticipated apocalypse. This phenomenon isn’t anything new.
The trend for fallout shelters, or bunkers, was popular in the ’60s as a precautionary measure during the Cold War. Many people who built them created luxury living spaces to not only live comfortably in, but actually mimic an idealized outside world to promote mental wellbeing alongside basic survival if a nuclear war did break out.
There’s one for sale in Las Vegas from the ’70s, and it’s magnificent to get to see.
From first glance and without context, you might never know this scenic view is entirely constructed.
The marvellous home was built by entrepreneur Girard B. “Jerry” Henderson.
A believer that the Cold War would obliterate the U.S., Jerry created the home in 1978 and lived there until he passed in 1983.
The 15,000sqft concrete and steel bunker is fitted with everything the owner needs to feel like life is business as usual.
The house itself is 5000sqft and is fitted with everything a dream home could be equipped with.
It has a pool, spa, barbecue, fountain, waterfall, trees, kitchen, six bathrooms, five massive ornate bedrooms, dining area, living room, and even a bar area with a dance floor.
It even has a working fireplace!
The rooms look completely untouched from its build in 1978, and while kitschy, they’re totally something I would want in my home today, not going to lie!
