The question of who pays the hospital bill when meals are prepared for someone with an allergy is known to cause a stir among those involved. However, many believe that the person who made the meal is only responsible for the allergic reaction if he is aware that the person in question is allergic to an ingredient in the meal prepared. A Redditor has received support from her family members and other Redditors over her refusal to pay his cousin’s hospital bills.
The Redditor Often Organises Thanksgiving For Her Family

Her Cousin’s Stepdaughter Was Allergic To One Some Of The Delicacies

The Reddit User Refuses To Pay The Hospital Bills
The 32-year-old female took to Reddit asking if she was wrong for refusing to pay the hospital bill of his cousin’s stepdaughter who fell sick after eating peanut butter cookies at her home. The Reddit user took over the family’s Thanksgiving host rotation from her mother a few years ago and has made it a point to ask about allergies and food preferences beforehand.
The host’s cousin informed her that he would be joining in the festivities with his wife and his 8-year-old stepdaughter. The Redditor revealed she asked her family members about their allergies and food preferences. The cousin, however, did not inform her of his stepdaughter’s allergy to peanuts.
At the Thanksgiving dinner, she made peanut butter cookies, a dessert well beloved by herself and her family. Her cousin’s stepdaughter had one of the cookies and had an allergic reaction. The little girl was rushed to the emergency room before being transferred to another hospital where she stayed overnight. She, however, recovered after that.
A week later, told her that she and her husband were expected to pay the hospital bill which amounted to $6000. She refused to pay the bill since the cousin did not inform her of the allergy beforehand. The host and her husband did, however, pay the $500 copay at the ER. The extended family has been involved in the matter and most are on her side, though a few blamed her for having made anything with peanuts since peanut allergies are quite common.
The host claimed that although she feels bad about her cousin’s stepdaughter falling sick, she does not have the money to pay for the hospital bills. The $500 she paid as a copay at the ER even came out of her Christmas budget.
The Reddit user also revealed that after reaching out to her uncle who was not present at the event, she learned that her cousin did not tell the family that she was not informed of the allergy issues, nor did he tell them that she and her husband took care of the initial copay.
Her uncle, however, did assure her that he believes his son should take responsibility for his mistakes and would have a word with his son. Other Reddit users have also taken her side on the matter, stating that the cousin should take responsibility for his own negligence and pay the bills.
