It takes a pretty special show to not only attract a following, but to keep it for a long time. It’s hard work just to put together one good season of TV, let alone multiple seasons, and, given the multitude of choices out there, to get eyeballs on your show.
But a few have indeed managed it, and it’s remarkable when it happens. No wonder fans of Grey’s Anatomy are celebrating.
If the idea of a show returning for two more seasons when it’s already had 15 of them sounds boring, don’t tell that to “Grey’s Anatomy” fans.
I mean, those fans have stuck by the show’s side through thick and thin, as well as an Olympic-sized swimming pool of tears. If they haven’t left by now, they’re with it until the bitter end — and frankly, they’re elated at the idea.
Anyway, the contracts have been signed and it’s all official now — “Grey’s Anatomy” isn’t going anywhere for at least two more years.
The TV stalwart set a record in its 15th season as the longest running primetime medical drama, besting “ER” with its 332nd episode. Now, Meredith Grey and the gang at Grey Sloan Memorial will get to pile onto that record.
Needless to say, the show’s die-hards have been celebrating the news on social media.
While some other fandoms out there who will remain nameless lament their shows flaming out spectacularly after a handful of seasons, Grey’s is still going strong, and their fans by and large haven’t lost their enthusiasm.
Mind you, given all the heartache-y episodes Grey’s has put out over 15 season, you have to wonder why folks keep tuning in.
But there is a reason they keep coming back after all the tears Grey’s has jerked over the years.
“The writing of @GreysABC is so good because within the span of 30 minutes you’ll experience 5 emotions and this happens almost every episode,” explained @altonpeques on Twitter .
Renewal day was a great day for Grey’s creator Shonda Rhimes in general.
ABC is bringing back two of her other series as well, with How to Get Away With Murder renewed for a sixth season, and Grey’s spinoff Station 19 getting a third season. Station 19 is the second spinoff from Grey’s after Private Practice which ran from 2007-13.
As far as Rhimes is concerned, there’s only one real factor as to how long Grey’s will stay on the air.
And that’s Ellen Pompeo — basically, as long as she wants to do the show, there will be a show. No Meredith Grey = no Grey’s Anatomy right?
So even though we’re pretty sure there are many more tears in store for the future of Grey’s, the show’s fans still have plenty to look forward to.
What do you think? Are you still watching Grey’s? Are you pumped for two more seasons?
