It’s pretty hard to believe, but I’ve actually been working from home for several months now. Which is sort of funny, because when all of this began, I was convinced it would only be a few weeks — a month, tops.
But here we are, more than halfway through the garbage pile that is 2020, and I’m still sitting in my guest bedroom with my laptop instead of in an office somewhere with actual real-live people.
Even though the setting and circumstances have changed, the physical “work” part of it really hasn’t.

Which brings me to the biggest lesson that WFH has taught me: It wasn’t the actual office space that made me feel a little unmotivated sometimes.
Turns out, it’s just the fact that I have have to work, period , that makes me want to go back to bed at 1:00 in the afternoon. Who knew?
I was under the assumption that doing everything at home would make the 9-5 life feel slightly less *blah*.

But I was wrong.
I may not be sitting at my usual desk surrounded by the usual people in the same, usual office, but I still get stressed, and I still have days where my motivation is totally MIA.
Believe me, I know I’m one of the lucky ones, and I really don’t have anything to complain about.

At least I still have a job, one which I can do from home and not in an environment that might make me feel unsafe, particularly during these times.
I should say that I also have great respect for those front-line workers who have been bravely powering through this pandemic without any complaints, while other people moan about having to put on a mask at the grocery store.
But I think it’s fair to say we all have our bad days. And sometimes, it can be a little hard to shake ourselves out of that kind of funk, no matter where we work.

So, to all you people out there who got up this morning and forced yourself to work (whether that was in a hospital, an office building, or maybe even just your guest bedroom), I salute you.
And I also applaud you if you found the willpower to resist sneaking a quick drink of the good stuff before you left because that’s just impressive.
Teach me your ways?
