35 Pics Of Things That Are Probably Way Bigger Than You Thought

Size isn’t necessarily an accomplishment in itself, but there’s still something primal and awe-inducing about things that dwarf us and make us feel small.

So here’s a reminder that there are things in the world that can still put our lives in perspective and remind us that we’re not the kings of all creation that we think we are.

Just confirming, dinosaurs were huge.

This fossilized dinosaur femur weighs in at an estimated 500 kg (1102 lbs.), which really makes all the displays in museums that much more impressive, doesn’t it?

He’s in a herd of his own.

This is Knickers, an Australian steer that stands about as tall as Michael Jordan, while significantly outweighing him at about 1.4 tonnes.

Knickers’ sheer size has saved his life, as he’s too big for the abattoir.

That’s a lot of calamari.

When a giant squid washed up on a New Zealand beach, this guy had to get a comparison pic in. Would not want to end up on the business end of those tentacles!

These rolls of sandpaper are all the same length.

The difference in their sizes comes from the difference in grits, 80 on the bottom vs. 120 in the middle vs. 220 on top. The size of grit really adds up!

What could possibly need such a massive screw?

This one is for mounting solar panels, which you really don’t want going anywhere on their own. Must be quite the task screwing these monsters in!

Reminder, Hoover Dam is gigantic.

This is reservoir side of the dam before it filled up with water and created Lake Mead. Fun fact: had the dam been built with a single, continuous pour of concrete, it would still be cooling today — the engineers calculated it would take 125 years for it to fully cool.

But those big ol’ paws aren’t just for taking swipes — they also act as snowshoes, allowing them to get around in deep snow with ease.

To say Siberian tigers are tall would not be a reach.

When is driftwood not driftwood? When it’s a drift-tree.

This behemoth found itself parked on a beach in Washington State back in 2010. No surprise, it has stayed there and become a popular picture spot while other driftwood gets washed back out to sea.

About 40 pounds separates these two MMA fighters.

Well, 40 pounds and more than a foot in height. Alisha Zappitella, on the left, stands 4’11” and fights in the atomweight division, while Megan Anderson, on the right, stands 6’0″ and fights in the featherweight division.

This looks like it could be little models of drones on a set until you see the workers standing next to the drones.

This hangar is full of MQ-9 Reaper drones, each of which has a 66-foot wingspan and weighs almost 5,000 lbs.

Whales are big, yes, but how big?

Well, this is a pretty average human next to a whale’s skull, so…yeah, whales are massive.

Bugatti once made a car that was 21 feet long! Only seven of the Bugatti Royale were ever produced, however, and only three were ever sold — not due so much to the trouble with parking such a behemoth, but because the Great Depression was on.

A real earth-mover.

This beast of an excavator tips the scales at almost 800 tons, which explains why it has to be moved on a trailer with 16 axles.

Well, there’s a reason why all those cars look so tiny next to this excavator.

It’s because this is Bagger 288 , one of the largest digging machines in the world. It makes the excavator above it look like a toy, weighing in at 13,500 tons, and it’s capable of digging the equivalent of a football field to 98 feet deep in a day.

In case you weren’t sure just how big the pyramids were in person.

The Great Pyramid was the tallest structure for almost 4000 years for a reason! And if it’s this big, imagine every structure that surpassed it.

The King of the Moths.

This is an Atlas Moth! They’re one of the largest species of moths, but fun fact, they only survive a few days after becoming a moth, as their metamorphosis process leaves them without a mouth. Seems the world was not long for these beasts.

I still vividly remember the day I found out wombats were this big, I always pictured them the size of groundhogs. This wombat here is named Patrick, and he was the oldest living wombat, passing away at 32 years old in 2017.

Wave breakers, so many wave breakers.

These are tetrapods, specifically the ones near High Island Reservoir Hong Kong. They’re giant, interlocking figures meant to help prevent coastal erosion as they break incoming waves and let water flow around instead of against them.

Oh you wanted a horse? How about a double-decker bus?

These are Clydesdales, a huge breed of horse that makes most other horses pale in comparison. They’re not even the biggest, though. Other species like Pecherons dwarf even these guys, and suddenly I’m starting to understand why some people are scared of horses.

There’s a reason some fish are meant to stay in the deep sea.

This is the source of my nightmares, the Oarfish. They are usually deep-sea fish, swimming vertically with their heads upwards. They’ve only been seen at the surface when sick and dying, and are thought to be the inspiration behind some of the sea monster myths that have floated around for centuries. This isn’t even the biggest they can get. Be scared with me.

There’s caves, then there’s Caves.

This cave is actually the largest cave on Earth, Son Doong in Vietnam. It’s over 3.1 miles long, 660 feet high, and 490 feet wide, with its own jungle, river, and weather system independent of that aboveground.

Yeah, it’s really this tall. No, I didn’t know either.

Michaelangelo’s ‘David’ stands at 17 feet tall, which makes the sculpture all the more impressive seeing as I thought it was, like, 8 feet at most.

Even with the word ‘giant’ in the name, I never thought they could get this big.

This is the Galápagos Giant Tortoise, and while this specific picture plays with perspective a little bit, they are still the largest species of tortoise and can grow to weight upwards of 900 pounds!

And to one-up the tortoise on the weight category is the Bison.

This male bison, who’s getting some blood tests done in this photo, weighs about 3000 pounds. No wonder they need such a contraption to keep him in place.

Okay, not as big as the other examples, but cool on its own.

What you’re looking at here is the Valonia Ventricosa. It’s the world’s largest single-cell organism, about the size of a tennis ball. So, yes, this isn’t really that big, but for a single-cell organism it’s incredible!

The water shaves 10 pounds.

For how big they are on the outside, I’m sure anyone who’s been deployed in one can promise it feels a lot, lot smaller on the inside.

Moose. Are. Always. Bigger. Than. You. Think.

I feel like many of us go a while without thinking about moose or conceptualizing a moose, so the next time we try we think they’re, like, around the size of horses.

Let this be a warning. They are always so much bigger than you think, and they’re built like brick houses.

Too much of a good thing.

Behold Cave of the Crystals in Naica, Chihuahua, Mexico. They hold gigantic selenite crystals, some of the largest crystals ever found, and when they used to accept visitors, their time would be limited due to heat and the toxic atmosphere. They’re now closed to visitors though, being allowed to return to their natural flooded state.

Just when you thought trees couldn’t get any bigger.

This is a Sequoia tree. Of course they don’t all get this big, but someone who grew up near Sequoia National Park said that there were tons of these types of giants. Many would even split off into multiple trees with the same, giant trunk and root system!

Humans aren’t the only animals that can make things much larger than themselves.

This guy says he’s 5’11”, and he’s standing next to a mound built by termites. He added that this one wasn’t even the largest one around.
