This isn’t exactly a hot take, people have been saying this a lot over the past year.
There is definitely a lot of controversy over the concept, and recently, a very famous director weighed in on it.
Todd Phillips, who directed both ‘Joker’ and ‘The Hangover’ weighed in on it:
“Go try to be funny nowadays with this woke culture. There were articles written about why comedies don’t work anymore.”
He continued by saying:
“It’s hard to argue with 30 million people on Twitter. You just can’t do it, right? So you just go, ‘I’m out.’ I’m out, and you know what?”
He basically thinks there is little hope for comedies.
“With all my comedies – I think that’s what comedies, in general, all have in common – is they’re irreverent.”
What do you think about it?
Do you think Phillips is being overdramatic, or do you think he has a point?
