In all families, parents choose how they want to raise their children . Sometimes, when having more than one child, the way in which you choose to parent one of them may not work for the other. Or, as a parent, you may decide to do things differently with different children based on experience and need.
While all children are different, there are times when parenting two children differently can backfire and surely hurt a child. Sometimes, it’s better to treat your kids equally than make them feel different from their siblings.
One Father Shared on Reddit How She Chose to Treat Her Two Children Vastly Different
The Father Said That When His Two Children Broke Their Devices, He Got His Daughter a New Phone, But Not His Son
The father shared that his 17-year-old daughter lives full-time with his ex-wife, while his 8-year-old son lives with him full-time along with his new wife. His daughter had broken her cell phone and needed a new one—so, the father decided to get her a new one. He claims that because his daughter is not with him full-time, and he does not get to do much for her on a day-to-day basis, he wanted to do something nice for her.
Then, his son broke his iPad and needed a new one. Instead of doing the same as he did for his daughter, the father told his son that it would take a while for his iPad to be fixed. In addition, the money to fix it would come out of his allowance, rather than the father paying for it outright, as he did for the daughter.
His wife claims that the way he handled both children was “wrong.” If he was going to buy his daughter a new device, he most certainly should have bought his son one, too.
Reddit Users Said The Dad Was 100% in the Wrong For How He Handled This
Many online said that the father was wrong because his son had the iPad for two years and it broke out of wear and tear—not because he broke it. Meanwhile, his daughter had her new phone for a few months and broke it by having a friend throw her phone at her—irresponsibly. If anything, his daughter did not deserve a new phone.
Other People Said He’s Holding His 8-Year-Old to a High Standard
Many Reddit users also pointed out that his son is only 8, while his daughter is 17. He is holding his son to a high standard, that of someone double his age. People claimed it was not right to be angry at his son but not at his daughter.
