Meal deals are a popular choice for many, offering a quick and cheap lunch. But recently, a video showing how these sandwiches are made has left people shocked. Some are even reconsidering their lunch choices. The video, from a 2001 episode of How It’s Made, gives us a peek inside a factory where sandwiches are mass-produced, and it’s just a tad bit gross!
Meal deals have become a lunchtime staple
Pre-packaged sandwiches, crisps, and drinks are a go-to for many. They’re affordable, easy to grab, and just a super convenient lunch to get you through the day.
But have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes?
“Of course our sandwiches, wraps and pasta pots don’t just appear out of thin air readily made; they’re the end product of mass production at your local sandwich factory.” This video from a sandwich factory has seriously shocked people, showing exactly how these sandwiches are made.
The viral video reveals the whole process
The clip comes from a 2001 episode of Discovery Channel’s How It’s Made. It shows workers checking over big blocks of bread before they’re loaded into a machine. Have a look at the clip for yourself.
Bread and butter, the industrial way
The machine spreads butter on each slice of bread, then there’s a squirt of mayonnaise. From there, the bread moves along a conveyor belt to workers who add fillings like meat and cheese. Once that’s done, the sandwiches are sealed and cut into those perfect little triangles. Et voila.
Mayonnaise dispensing left viewers uneasy
There’s also a part of the video that shows a sandwich being made entirely by a robot, and the blobs of egg mayo it dispenses definitely aren’t the most appetizing to watch!
Robots aren’t the only ones handling your food
Viewers were horrified to see how their lunch was being handled in the clip. “I think the machines putting the sandwiches together are cleaner than them hands,” one viewer commented.
Where are the gloves?
“Bare hands? No hygienic food safety gloves? No thank you,” another one added.
And someone joked, “Imagine if one of the worker’s wedding rings fell off and ended up in your sandwich…”
The hilariously disappointing reality of fillings
For some, humor was the only way to process this. One user joked, “That dude who spreads out the handful of cheese must have had the day off when my sandwich was made.”
No specific factories or brands were named
One thing to keep in mind, though: How It’s Made doesn’t say which factory the sandwiches were made in, or which stores they end up in. That means your go-to lunch might be made differently than what’s shown in the video. So don’t start a sandwich boycott just yet!
