The National Basketball Association took the unprecedented step of suspending its regular season on Wednesday night.
A player for the Utah Jazz has tested positive for coronavirus, prompting league commissioner Adam Silver to announce that the league would suspend games until further notice.
The announcement came moments before tipoff.

The Utah Jazz were in Oklahoma City to take on the Thunder Wednesday night. The teams were ready to tip off when the public address announcer told fans and players that the game was cancelled “due to unforeseen circumstances”.
While it wasn’t immediately apparent at the time why the game was cancelled, the league later said that the decision was made after an unknown Utah Jazz player tested positive for coronavirus.
The NBA made this announcement.

The league made the suspension official with this tweet . While the NBA said they would take time to examine possible next steps, there’s no indication of what will happen with the remainder of the season, or the upcoming playoffs.
The story continues to develop.

Soccer games in Europe have been played in empty stadiums. Meanwhile, in North America, pro leagues have closed off locker rooms but games are still proceeding as scheduled. It remains to be seen if other pro leagues, including the NHL, MLS and MLB, follow the NBA’s lead.
