Miley Cyrus has never been shy — ever — not once. It’s what we love most about her! She is always unafraid to be herself and speak her mind.
In a recent interview with Variety and iHeart’s “The Big Ticket” podcast, Miley candidly opened up about sobriety, her Black Mirror character, Ashley O, and some of her harbored feelings about “abandonment”.
If you’re a fan of Miley Cyrus, the you probably already know that she is one of the realest people on the planet.
She always tells it like it is, and has never been afraid to simply be herself.
It’s admirable!
So, in a recent interview with *Variety* and iHeart’s “The Big Ticket” podcast, it came as no surprise that she spoke candidly.

She opened up about her “abandonment feelings”, sobriety, and her Netflix Black Mirror character , Ashley O.
“There were some obvious similarities through the character that I’ve played before that actually really became my life,” she began, referring to her *Black Mirror* character, pop star Ashley O.

“Like her wanting to explore rock ’n’ roll and change genres,” she explained .
She compared her character to her real life experience of playing *Hannah Montana*, and being pigeonholed for it for much of her subsequent career.

“That’s something that, right after ‘Hannah Montana”, was really important to me.”
She went on to talk about how her mom, Trish, has been managing her career thus far.

“My mom has been my momager. I’m almost freaking 30, and I don’t buy a lightbulb for my house without asking my mom if it’s the right one,” she said .
She admitted that without having the loving support of her parents, she may have actually ended up being a lot more like Ashley O.

“Without my parents, I bet my life would’ve been more similar to the Ashley O story,” she said .
“The thing that really makes me different than Ashley are my parents and the team that my parents put around me,” she continued.

“Like when I was looking for a manager, we got whoever Dolly [Parton] told me would be protective over me.”
“It didn’t have to do with, ‘He’s going to make you star,” she explained.

“It was, ‘You’re going to feel comfortable with your child travelling with him and he’s going to take care of her and respect [your] values .’”
She then explained what her life has been like since deciding to be sober one year ago.

She revealed that staying sober has been important to her because it allows her to pay more attention to her music career.
“It’s been really important for me over the last year living a sober lifestyle because I really wanted to polish up my craft,” she said.

“I had [a] really big vocal surgery in November. I had freaking four weeks where I wasn’t allowed to talk .”
“I was so ripped writing on the whiteboard, yelling at everybody,” she joked.

“I had this one big bicep from just yelling at mom and still trying to do meetings. But it prepared me for the stillness and the quietness .”
“I had been thinking a lot about my mother. My mom was adopted, and I inherited some of the feelings she had, the abandonment feelings and wanting to prove that you’re wanted,” she went on.

“My dad’s parents divorced when he was 3, so my dad raised himself. ”
“I did a lot of family history, which has a lot of addiction and mental health challenges,” she said.

“Just going through that and asking , ‘Why am I the way that I am?’”
“By understanding the past, we understand the present and the future much more clearly.”

“I think therapy is great,” she added.
Therapy is great, and increasingly normalized these days. Certainly something to take advantage of!
