For about as long as the technology has been available, the adult film industry has had a strange public image.
Although many people would claim not to approve of the materials that porn purveyors supply, the fact remains that even after widespread piracy is taken into account, we’re still talking about a multi-billion dollar industry.
As LA Weekly reported , it’s notoriously difficult to figure out how many billions we’re talking about, but it’s clear that despite its sordid reputation, this industry has no shortage of customers.
And one of its most enthusiastic fans has just lost what appears to be an incredibly valuable collection.
Back in October of 2016, a man who will not be identified went through a divorce.

This led him to move back in with his parents, who also will not be identified, in Grand Haven, Michigan.
According to Fox17 , he would do housework instead of paying rent.
When he moved back in, however, he brought a lot of belongings with him.

According to Fox17 , among these possessions were 12 boxes adult films and two boxes of sex toys.
The man estimated the total value of this collection at $28,940.72.
He and his porn stash stayed at this Grand Haven home for 10 months.

However, this arrangement came to a sudden end after police responded to a domestic incident in August of 2017.
It’s unclear what exactly unfolded here, but as a result, the man moved to Indiana.
By November of the same year, his parents would end up visiting his new home.

Apparently, the purpose of this visit was to return everything the man had left at their house before the incident.
Everything, the man would soon discover, except for the 14 boxes of racy material.
According to court documents obtained by Fox17, this was because his parents had systematically destroyed all of the porn.

As they allegedly said in an email, “We counted 12 moving boxes full of pornography plus two boxes of ‘sex toys’ as you call them. We began that day the process of destroying them and it took quite a while to do so.”
The man filed a police report after this happened and tried on two separate occasions to convince authorities to investigate his parents.

During the second instance, he reportedly sent 44 emails detailing the titles his parents had destroyed. He did this because many of them are now out of print.
As he put it, “Not Just Out of Print. But the entire studio making it dissolved, and that was 20 years ago.”
Regardless, prosecutors in Ottawa County declined to file any charges.
And so, the man is now suing his parents and seeking $86,822.16 in damages.

Since this is a civil case with no criminal charges entered, neither party needs to be publicly identified, which is why their names haven’t been released.
A month after he filed the police report, the man emailed his father, saying, “If you had a problem with my belongings, you should have stated that at the time and I would have gone elsewhere. Instead you choose to keep quiet and behave vindictively.”
In response, the father said he destroyed his son’s porn for his own mental and emotional health.

As he put it, “I would have done the same if I had found a kilo of crack cocaine. Someday, I hope you will understand.”
Although this response might seem extreme, there’s an extensive family history behind it.

In his youth, the son was reportedly expelled from both high school and college for selling porn to other students.
As the father wrote, “I also warned you at that time if I ever found pornography in my house again, I would destroy it.”
Obviously, he wasn’t bluffing.
