While it can be fun to mock other people for doing this, it’s surprisingly easy to jump to conclusions and make ourselves look foolish.
Whether it comes from stretching a shred of evidence too far, an overwhelming need to be seen as a hero , or as a coping mechanism for our own insecurities , it rarely ends well.
And while it may seem like justice often moves at a snail’s pace, there’s a great deal of value in due process. That’s because the kind of quick, rash vigilante justice that may seem satisfying in the moment can often have some harmful and even irreversible long-term effects.
Although it’s unclear how those effects will play out after the story we’re about to go over is told, what is clear is that one hasty decision is already showing some serious consequences.
This handsome fella is a rescue dog by the name of Maximo Tiberio and he’s known to have some problems with aggression.

As the man now caring for him explained in a Reddit post , this has resulted in the dog’s vet recommending a muzzle while the man is training him.
Every week, the man takes Maximo and his 11-year-old daughter out to the dog park and that muzzle is always firmly attached.
However, it seems like these trips to the dog park didn’t go as unnoticed as he thought.

After a false alarm that saw the man’s daughter leave his sight, he tied the dog up in an area intended for that purpose and quickly found her.
However, he soon noticed a young woman running towards Maximo as he headed back to the dog and she suddenly scooped him up before making a break for her car.
In the man’s words, “Max is visibly stressed but because of the muzzle he can’t do anything.”
And while he couldn’t stop her in time either, he managed to get a picture of her license plate and gave it to the police.

A day later, she and Maximo would be brought into the station with the dog in what the man described as a “deplorable state” of anxiety.
But as for what possessed the dognapper to do this, the man said, “The girl explains to me that she took Maximo because she thinks I am abusing him and that she watches every Monday how he uses a muzzle against his will.”
And while the stress and deterioration of Maximo’s condition compelled the man to press charges regardless of her intentions, his sister and some of his friends are telling him he’s a horrible person for doing so.
This led him to seek an outside perspective from a Reddit community and as far as they were concerned, he should throw the book at her.

As one user put it , “Charge that woman, if she wants to help animals she should volunteer with shelters or rescue programs. There is a reason vigilantism is frowned upon, this is a prime example.”
Others were also not entirely convinced that this was her genuine reason for stealing the dog.
In the words of one person, “She could just as easily be covering up an ordinary theft. She steals dog who’s off by himself, sells dog without disclosing any issues, uses muzzle for plausible deniability.”
At the lightest, some thought he should press charges but ask for leniency. Nobody wanted her to get away with it, though.
