There probably hasn’t been a time when a first date wasn’t a nerve-wracking prospect and there’s only so much that any app in the world can do about that.
What it often comes down to is that we don’t really know what someone will want and how well we’ll get along with them until we actually meet up with them. And while some clever romantics know this and have found some clever ways to manage expectations, others either end up arguing or spending their time together awash in awkward feelings.
But while most bad dates are pretty obvious after you finally make it through them, one story shows us that even the ones that seem like they went perfectly can surprise us.

In a video uploaded to TikTok on December 28, a woman named Nikki detailed the fallout from a date that seemed to go well.

As she proved in a follow-up video , this saw her meet a guy in a restaurant he had chosen and got a reservation for before they went out for ice cream and then to another restaurant for drinks.
By her estimate, they spent about six hours together and in a detail that will become important later, the ice cream was something she bought herself.
And since it all seemed to go so well, they arranged to meet the following Sunday when he was supposed to return from a work trip.
But when she checked in a couple of days before, she didn’t receive a reply and Sunday came and went without any further communication from him.

Figuring that he had ghosted her, she said, “And that was kind of that, I never expected to hear from him again.”
However, by the time Christmas rolled around, he texted her again and apologized for his late reply before assuring her that he’s not ghosting her.
And while her reply was polite, she made it clear that she wanted to address the radio silence he left her with and wondered why he didn’t tell her that they couldn’t meet up.
In her words, “So he comes back with this excuse and there’s a lot of things wrong with it.”

As we can see, the guy started to go on the defensive and say that he wasn’t eager to reach out after she used the bathroom around the time that the check showed up at each restaurant.
He implied that she did this intentionally to get out of paying any part of the bill. In response, she argued in her video that he had the sequence of events wrong and that neither check had arrived by the time she used the bathroom.
She also mentioned that she would have paid for his ice cream if he hadn’t declined and wondered why he texted her if he saw so many red flags.
Nonetheless, he went on to say that she had picked the restaurant and ordered what she wanted with no offer to pay.
He then seemed to accuse her of using him for his trust fund, which she said that she had no knowledge of.
She added in her follow-up that she didn’t go out of her way to pick an expensive entree and argued that she had actually picked one of the cheaper items on the menu.
The original TikTok available here has sparked some debate after its release, with some claiming that the man is using his own insecurities to justify his ghosting. At the same time, others argued that she shouldn’t have assumed he would pay for their meals.
But if there’s one thing that people could agree on, it’s that there was definitely a failure to communicate here.
