It’s true that our favorite movies and TV shows can inspire some rather heated fandom. When we get caught up in something like Game of Thrones , it’s easy to find yourself going on an extended rant about those dastardly Lannisters at the water cooler while your co-workers smile and nod and slowly back away. It happens, and it’s one of the marks of a good show.
However, even when the show contains an important message that’s worth everyone hearing and paying attention to, there’s such a thing as taking it a step too far.
First off, yes, everybody should watch ‘Roots.’

The original 1970s mini-series is widely considered the seminal work about the history of slavery in America. Based off the book by Alex Haley, it received a mind-boggling 37 Emmy nominations and launched the career of LeVar Burton. It’s not always an easy watch, but that’s what makes it important.
However, there’s a line, and one man in Cedar Rapids is accused of crossing it.
Robert Lee Noye, 52, stands accused of kidnapping a woman and forcing her to watch ‘Roots.’

According to The Gazette , the woman told police that Noye had forced her to sit with him and watch all nine hours of the mini-series “so she could better understand her racism.”
Apparently, the woman did try to escape her captor.
But, when she made her attempt, Noye allegedly told her to “remain seated and watch the movie with him or he would kill her and spread her body parts across Interstate 380 on the way to Chicago.”
So, Noye now faces charges of first degree harassment and false imprisonment – which, it should really go without saying, Kunta Kinte would not be okay with.
