Not so long ago, there was a popular meme where an office worker brought a peanut butter sandwich to work and a few curious colleagues wanted to try it. Turns out, they were all allergic to it. While it’s totally fine to laugh at the situation and memes that followed, real accidents do happen that cause you to think how terribly unfair life is. A similar story appeared on the AITA subreddit where a worker brought her favorite recipe to the work place and got accused of harming her coworker after she stole the food and ended up in the hospital. This is what happened.

This woman is facing a tough situation at work, as her coworkers accuse her of poisoning snacks and vilifying her.

“Who’s in the wrong here?” A woman accused of poisoning her snacks is facing a dilemma!

A woman finds herself in a difficult situation when her boss accuses her of poisoning her snacks because her coworker got hospitalized. She claims to be in the clear legally, but is feeling the pressure from her coworkers and is even considering quitting her job. She brought a peanut sauce dish for lunch, a recipe she learned from her friend at her restaurant, which unknowingly led to her coworker being hospitalized due to a severe nut allergy. She warns her boss that she will report any harassment to Human Resources, but feels there is an unfairness to the situation. Is she in the wrong here? Read on to find out what others think.

The commentor, identified as NTA, advises the OP to go to HR immediately, since their boss behavior is 100% inappropriate. The replies to the comment include one that reminds the OP that their food was stolen, and another that emphasizes how serious a breech of food allergy protocol it is.

NTA: Stealing food is dangerous!

The_Void33 | The_Void33

The comment states that the poster is not the a**hole because it wasn’t the poster who fed the food to the coworker – she stole it. There are two replies which emphasize the risks of stealing food, with one noting that even seemingly harmless dishes can contain potentially life-threatening allergens.

Boss accuses her of ?!

Madison_M_M | Madison_M_M

The commentor is adamant that their boss is NTA (not the a**hole), and questions why the coworker “borrowed” her lunch without returning it or compensating her. Another reply questions how the coworker intends to return the food after ingesting it.

NTA: don’t be intimidated

Away_Refuse8493 | Away_Refuse8493

OP’s boss accused them of poisoning snacks due to their coworker getting hospitalized. Go to HR and report both the boss and his daughter for theft. Don’t forget everyone else engaging in workplace harassment; the daughter should be terminated for stealing. OP has nothing to apologize for, they are a victim of theft and nothing else.

Need HR help?

Similar-Koala-5361 | Similar-Koala-5361

The comment suggests that OP go to HR ASAP for help as the boss and coworkers have created a hostile work environment for them. The reply states that HR will likely be of benefit in this case and suggests that OP might have to jump companies to properly escape the situation.

Report to HR

ZombieZookeeper | ZombieZookeeper

The commenter advises the original poster to report the incident to HR before their boss spins the story. They are NTA (not the a**hole). A reply to the comment mentions that HR is probably already aware of the incident, calling it a little sus (suspicious).

OP stands strong

lesbian_goose | lesbian_goose

NTA: The boss accuses OP of poisoning her snacks, but OP completely clears her name. The boss’ daughter is responsible for not checking for peanuts. OP should report the boss to HR and explicitly warn him of consequences if revenge is taken. No payment for medical bills should be made and the thief should be reported as well. Replies support OP to notify HR for documentation purposes.

NTA: thief’s ‘WAY PAST’ old enough to know better

rapt2right | rapt2right

The original poster claims the accused woman is not the a**hole as she’s ‘way past’ old enough to know better than to steal food from the workplace and thus put her coworker in danger. The poster suggests going to HR and recording her side of the story, as well as exploring the possibility of leaving the team for a better work environment.

‍♀️ A stolen lunch

claypolejr | claypolejr

The comment argued that the woman is NTA (not the a**hole) for the accusation of poisoning snacks. The comment also stated that she ‘stole’ the lunch, and a reply to the comment stated that she ‘almost won the Darwin award’.

NTA: ‍♀️

Ducky818 | Ducky818

The comment suggests that the original poster is ‘not the a**hole’ (NTA) in this situation, as the boss’ daughter was stealing food that was not hers, and went into anaphylactic shock as a result. The comment further advises the original poster to look for a new job as the boss is making their life difficult.

Take legal action!

useragreement13 | useragreement13

The commenter suggests that the woman should take legal action against her boss, who accused her of poisoning snacks. The comment also states that the woman has done nothing wrong, and the daughter could have killed herself due to not being aware of what she was eating.

Coworkers suck up to the boss and the OP is considering quitting

raineydays13 | raineydays13

The commenter is labeling the boss as NTA (not the a**hole), for accusing the woman of poisoning her snacks. They also think the other older coworkers are sucking up to the boss. The OP is considering the offer from their friend to quit their job if they can afford it. The replies pitifully state they will look into it and they plan to ‘f**k Carter and his brat’ if they do quit.

Be careful what you accuse!

cantgetridofme1986 | cantgetridofme1986

The commentor pointed out that the woman couldn’t have killed her coworker by stealing her food as that’s not possible. She also made an observation that when someone borrows your food, you don’t expect it back the same way. The reply confirmed the thought with an example.

‍♀️ NTA! Report it HR

bb9272-is-my-tea | bb9272-is-my-tea

The commenter believes that the woman is Not The A**hole (NTA) in this situation, and suggests to report it to the Human Resources directly to fill out the necessary paperwork.

NTA: HR should be notified

Ippus_21 | Ippus_21

The commenter pointed out that the boss accusations on the woman are unwarranted, and that it would be illegal to hold the woman responsible. The commenter recommended talking to the HR even if there are no explicit harassment from the boss. They also noted that someone with a severe food allergy stealing other people’s lunches was an irresponsible act that could have dangerous consequences.

NTA: Stealing food

Alicia2297 | Alicia2297

The comment says that “NTA: She STOLE your food. You didn’t poison her. She didn’t have the right to touch it and if she’s really allergic to nuts she should know better to check what’s in before eating it.” It also suggests that the commenter could press charges for stealing their food and harassing them.

NTA! Don’t just warn him, report him to HR.

Tanyec | Tanyec

According to the commenter, the boss is abusing his power and is guilty of harassment cased by his kid’s wrongdoings. They also recommended reporting the daughter for stealing the OP’s food. However, they raised doubts whether the story is true or if the OP is trolling, but the verdict stands regardless.

 Be careful & report!

[deleted] | [deleted]

The comment advised not to be the a**hole (NTA) but to be careful and to report the situation to HR. The commenter stated that they are as allergic to nuts as the coworker is and is careful about what they eat and never eat anything without asking for its ingredients.

Report theft & !

NTA – The commenter advises the OP to report the theft of their food, as well as harassment from their boss, to HR and also consider getting a lawyer. They also suggest talking to their friend about the job they are offering.

‍♂️NTA: Boss blames wrong person

Heraonolympia123 | Heraonolympia123

The commentor believes the woman is not to blame as the individual who stole the snacks must have known they had a severe allergy and was willing to risk it. The boss is ‘daft’ to have accused her and they suggest the boss is responsible to ‘pay for that’. They also advise the woman to record everything and report it to HR.

NTA: ✊️You didn’t do it

The commenter said NTA, or not the a**hole, and recommended the original poster to report the incident to Human Resources. They suggested that the original poster should not have to change what they bring for lunch, as the accused person should not have been stealing in the first place.

NTA, the commentor claims that a food thief has caused a catastrophe, unintentionally leading to a negative work environment. The commentor suggests reporting the incident to HR and looking for new employment.

Steal or not, NTA for a coworker’s misdeeds

Scared-March7443 | Scared-March7443

This comment affirms that the woman is Not the A**hole (NTA) in the situation, since she cannot be responsible for her coworker’s illegal actions. The comment also advises the woman to go to HR and report the situation, since another employee is creating a hostile work environment. The comment adds an unfair note of caution, suggesting that if the woman knew the coworker was stealing her lunch and put peanuts in it knowing that the coworker would eat it, she could be held criminally liable, even though the coworker stole the lunch.

Theft and Hostile Work Environment

The commenter believes that the woman who ate the food without permission should be reported for theft, and her ‘daddy’ should be reported for creating a hostile work environment. NTA.

Creative fiction or ‍♂️truth?

The comment expresses disbelief towards the accusation of stealing random meals and blames someone for having peanuts in food they allegedly stole. The comment suggests that the story is creative fiction and scores it a 2 out of 10.

‍ NTA: No food-stealing here

devasen_1 | devasen_1

The comment suggests that the boss has wrongly accused this woman of poisoning her snacks for a hospitalization incident, as the poster believes that the woman’s daughter should be mature enough not to take other people’s food without permission and should know what she’s eating.

No a-hole here!

The commenter believes the woman is not the a**hole in this situation, and questions the motive of why someone would “borrow” her lunch if they have a deathly allergy.

NTA. HR and a labor attorney needed?

ComprehensiveSir3892 | ComprehensiveSir3892

The comment says NTA (not the a**hole) and suggests that both HR and a labor attorney should be involved due to the boss’ accusations. The comment adds that it’s the boss who could have killed his daughter for teaching her to steal and shielding her from just consequences.

Boss’ daughter gets away with
