When it comes to anniversaries, some couples like to celebrate in fancy and elaborate ways. Sometimes this means a night out on the town at a fancy restaurant.
Other times, one of the spouses cooks a delicious dinner. Gifts, flowers, and cards are shared. They rejoice in their love and look back on memories and fun times. It sounds super romantic, right?
While some couples really go all out for anniversaries, not every couple is like that.
After being together for some time, some couples view anniversaries as just another day.
While they try to celebrate in their own way, they don’t go as “all-out” as they once did.
However, there are times where one person in the relationship feels like anniversaries are not as important as the other person.
What happens when one person in the relationship feels less inclined to celebrate, and the other feels upset or hurt?
Recently, one wife took to Reddit and asked if she was wrong for being upset with her husband who decided to go have dinner with his parents instead of his wife on their anniversary.
The wife, who is 3-months pregnant with her second child, says that her husband goes to his parents house regularly for dinner.
The kicker? She’s never invited.
“His parents and I (especially his mother) do not get on. They invite my husband over for dinner regularly, and my son and I are both explicitly and implicitly never invited,” she wrote.

On their 6th wedding anniversary, she asked if he wanted anything specific for dinner.
“I didn’t even know he was going to his parents’ house until the day of our anniversary, when I asked him if he wanted anything specific for dinner given that it’s a special occasion, and he admitted he forgot and had already said he would go to his parents’ house for dinner,” she said.
She also added that her MIL knew it was their anniversary, too.
“My husband and I had a conversation where my stance was ‘I can get past the fact that you forgot our anniversary, but you’re not seriously still going to your parents’ house now you know?’
And his stance was ‘I’m sorry that I forgot but I’ve now made plans with them and I can’t cancel last minute and it’s not like we had anything special planned, and we can always do something tomorrow,'” she wrote.
Clearly upset by the fact that her husband forgot their anniversary, the wife reacted.
“I then told him to go [expletive] himself, and he responded that this was clearly a hormone thing (because pregnant) and he’d talk to me once I calmed down. I then called him a prick and he left,” she said.
When he came home, he didn’t apologize. Instead, he was “waiting for his wife to apologize” instead.
“He came back once I was already asleep, and I found him on the sofa the next morning. I assumed he would come back to bed tonight, but he hasn’t, and he’s stuck to short monosyllabic responses all day. When I asked him why he was acting like this, he said he was waiting on an apology from me for yelling at him,” she wrote.
This led to an even bigger argument between the two.
“This led to another argument. He said that it was one day, we’re going to have years of anniversaries, and he genuinely forgot but he’d made plans but he couldn’t just cancel.
I said it wasn’t some once in a lifetime event, it was dinner with his parents, he could have adjusted, especially as he has dinner with them at least once a month and he knows I’m not welcome at their house,” she wrote.
She asked the Reddit community if she was “in the wrong” for being upset by her husband’s actions.
The majority of commenters on Reddit said this wife had every reason to be angry and upset.
“You do not owe him an apology. Damn I’m not pregnant and mad at your husband for this. Im mad that he didn’t tell his parents no, I’m mad that his mom didn’t say “oh hey isn’t the 9th yours and OP’s anniversary, lets do dinner another day”, and I’m mad that he didn’t apologize for leaving his PREGNANT WIFE ALONE ON THEIR ANNIVERSARY,” one person wrote.
