In the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, a family in Florida was horrified to return to their flooded home only to find a giant alligator in the kitchen.
Capturing the moment on video, they shared their terrifying experience on TikTok, which quickly went viral as experts warned of wildlife displacement following the storm.
After the family opened the door to their home, which had been submerged in floodwaters, the massive gator made itself known, baring its teeth.
“Holy s–t,” one of the family members exclaimed, unable to believe what they were seeing. The situation quickly escalated from a post-hurricane clean-up to a wildlife encounter of epic proportions.
As Hurricane Milton caused extensive flooding across parts of Florida, many wild animals were displaced.
In the video, the gator seemed calm yet menacing, prompting widespread concern about the number of displaced animals seeking shelter in homes.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has issued warnings, advising residents to be cautious as alligators, bears, and snakes could be in floodwaters or even inside buildings.
Biologist Christopher Gillette took to Instagram to emphasize the dangers posed by these animals.
“Gator safety during the hurricane!!” he wrote. “Watch for snakes and gators in the floodwaters, stay safe and stay out of the water! … The risk posed by wildlife in flood waters is actually relatively low, you should really stay out because it’ll be full of human sewage.”
The TikTok video featuring the massive alligator garnered over 4 million views, with viewers both shocked and amused.
One user commented, “I would immediately close the door and walk away,” capturing the exact sentiment most would feel when faced with such a situation.
“How did it even get inside?”
Another viewer questioned, genuinely baffled by how the creature made its way into the home. Meanwhile, others couldn’t help but point out how composed the family appeared. “How do people stay this calm?” one user wondered. “I want to be this calm at least once in my life.”
Even in the face of danger, some viewers found humor in the situation.
One joked, “That gator was like, ‘Close that door, it’s a hurricane outside,’” while another playfully imagined the gator saying, “Hear me out, it was like this when I got here.”
Even Canadians couldn’t resist chiming in with their own comparisons: “I will never complain about the Canadian winter again,” one user quipped.
The viral video sparked discussions about how people handle such unexpected events.
Many expressed fear of encountering wild animals displaced by natural disasters.“This was my worst fear for people right now in Florida — all the alligators and crocodiles,” one concerned viewer wrote.
As the cleanup continues after Hurricane Milton, experts remind residents that animals are just as displaced and confused as humans.

For now, the family that found the gator in their kitchen can take solace in the fact that they remained calm and composed during the ordeal.
As for the gator, it’s safe to say that it has returned to its natural habitat — hopefully far from anyone’s kitchen.
