There’s obviously much about cancer that most of us find worrying, but one of its scariest aspects concerns how subtle its early signs can be.
Because the unfortunate truth is that once the disease is advanced enough to actually cause noticeable pain, it’s often advanced enough to turn the odds against survival.
And that’s why it’s such a miraculous relief when something tips us off about our conditions before we have to take our first steps on that dark path. And while circumstances can sometimes align to provide that crucial information, we usually avoid the worst that a cancer diagnosis has to offer because of another person’s vigilance .
That’s why it was so important to one Canadian hockey manager to track down the woman who gave him the most significant message of his life.
Although 22-year-old Nadia Popovici attended a fateful hockey game in October to support the Seattle Kraken, it was a staff member for the opposing Vancouver Canucks who kept catching her eye.

According to Good Morning America, that was because she spotted what she suspected to be a cancerous mole on the neck of the team’s assistant equipment manager Brian “Red” Hamilton.
And since she was sitting rink-side, she took the opportunity to try to catch his attention with a message on her phone.
In her words, “I put mole, doctor and cancer in red and made them bold. I just held it up to the plexiglass and knocked.”
And although Hamilton has never seen the woman before, the fact that her warning was so persistent compelled him to get his mole checked out.
And it turned out Popovici was right to worry as a biopsy would eventually reveal that Hamilton’s mole was a warning sign of malignant melanoma in phase 2.
Recalling a conversation with his doctor, Hamilton said, “His line to me was, ‘I’m going to diagnose you with cancer. I’m also going to tell you that you have an angel in your life, because if you didn’t get that thing out in five years, you would not be here.'”
This revelation compelled Hamilton to try and find Popovici to thank her for saving his life, so he called on the hockey community for help.
As he put it, “To this woman I am trying to find, you changed my life and now I want to find you to say thank you so very much. The message you showed me on your cell phone will forever be etched into my brain and has made a true life-changing difference to me and my family.”
But while she was sleeping off an overnight shift at a crisis hotline at the time, her mother ended up seeing his message and let her know what was unfolding on social media.
And while we can see that the two ended up meeting, that wasn’t the only surprise in store for Popovici when she saw the Kraken play the Canucks again.
That’s because both teams came together to present her with a $10,000 scholarship for medical school on the same day she finally met the man she saved.
She said she was left speechless, but also marvelled at how her important message almost didn’t happen.
As she said, “I almost talked myself out of it, and it’s just the butterfly effect. Seriously, it’s so amazing.”
