Tom Hanks has been affectionately dubbed “America’s Dad”, and off-screen he has raised four children of his own: Colin, Elizabeth, Chet, and Truman.
When he’s not preparing for his next role , Tom has taken the time to share some parenting wisdom with us over the years.
As a father to four children, Tom quickly learned that no father-child relationship is the exact same.
“I get along with each [of my children] completely differently, and every relationship I have is a whole and complete one. But I know absolutely for certain that they need other people in their lives to come and stir them along,” he said .
He’s also faced hardships as a father like when his son, Chet, struggled with drug abuse.
“As a parent, you love your kids unconditionally. You support them every step of the way … You got to applaud the bravery and honesty when it actually comes out of your own house,” he said .
Despite the tough times, it seems that Tom has also taken a lighthearted approach to parenting.
“Every excursion is an adventure,” he said on being a dad to four children.
It certainly is!
And this quote from Tom really sums up parenting on the whole.
“It’s like being caffeine-deprived for 18 years,” he once said .
Ha, ha! I’m sure a lot of parents can relate to that one. It’s true — once you have kids, it’s kind of like someone hit fast-forward on your life.
