Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or dementia is pretty much a full-time job, and unless they’re under 24/7 surveillance, there’s always the frightening chance that they might one day wander off on their own and get lost.
This is an unfortunate reality for many people with these diseases.

In an effort to prevent this from happening, one company has come up with a pair of smart GPS shoe insoles that will allow you to track your loved ones with memory impairment, making sure they never get lost again.
SmartSole inserts come with a built-in tracking chip with a cellular signal, so you know where your loved ones are at all times.

According to the company’s website , these smart insoles slip into an individual’s shoe, just like any other insole would.
“This system capitalizes on procedural memory,” the website explains, “which means even those with advanced memory disorders typically remember to wear shoes!”
Once the wearer’s shoes have been fitted with the insoles, their loved ones can start tracking them using a smartphone, computer, or tablet.

As long as the individual stays in places with 2G cellular service connection or higher, you can open the application and see exactly where they are on a real-time map.
They aren’t fitted exactly like normal insoles though.

The website says the insoles are noticeably thicker than normal shoe inserts but have found no indication in their research that wearers find the added thickness uncomfortable by any means.
The company explains that these insoles remove the stigma, shame, and anxiety other tracking methods might cause someone with memory impairment.

Similar devices, such as tracking bracelets, are more visible and therefore more obvious, which can make for a whole host of problems. These insoles, however, are completely hidden and undetectable.
As the website reads, “This is wearable technology that not only provides peace of mind, but can also save lives, while preserving the privacy and dignity of the wearer.”
SmartSole technically only comes in three sizes, but each can be trimmed down to fit a wearer’s specific foot size.

The large can be trimmed to fit men’s sizes 15-12, the medium women’s 14-10, and the small kid’s 4-3.
The insoles have more than just one use though.

Yes, not only are these insoles perfect for seniors with memory impairments, they could also be used for children who have a particularly bad habit of wandering off from their parents, such as in densely crowded places.
Now, mom won’t have to worry herself sick!
Each SmartSole comes with a wireless charging pad, and a full charge lasts up to two days.
As for pricing, the inserts come with an option of two plans because just like cell phones, these trackers require a data plan for connectivity.
The device itself costs $299 up front, with monthly service costs varying depending on which plan you choose. Check out the full price packages here .
