It really doesn’t take much investigative work to figure out why people love dogs so much.
Not only can they do a lot for us and love us so much that they don’t mind doing it, there have been many times where their instincts have led them to make a profound difference in someone’s life .
And whether we’re talking about a baby in distress or soldiers on a mission on the other side of the world, there have been many occasions where they’ve outright saved people’s lives.
But of course, we humans aren’t the only ones who sometimes owe their very existence to a heroic dog. As one incredible story illustrates, their kindness can extend to other animals as well.
Back in 2018, a baby koala found itself in a tight spot that we still don’t have a full explanation for.
As Kerry McKinnon of Strathdownie, Australia told News.com.au, “I think the baby koala fell out of his mum’s pouch and didn’t know what to do.”
But however the tiny joey was separated from his mother, he suddenly found himself alone on a chilly night.
Fortunately, it happened to come across 45-year-old Kerry McKinnon’s back porch where her golden retriever Asha was curled up in bed.
And the next morning, McKinnon’s husband discovered the little joey nestled in Asha’s fur and keeping warm.
It obviously felt safe with the dog as it hissed and put up a fight when McKinnon separated the pair.
And while McKinnon burst out laughing at first, the dog only looked confused and remained very protective of the baby koala.
In McKinnon’s words, “She kept looking back at the koala but she wasn’t trying to get him off her or anything. She was happy to let him snuggle into her.”
The joey was reportedly doing well after being checked out by a veterinarian and was left with a local koala carer before it could be released into the wild.
And as far as McKinnon is concerned, Asha is the only reason why this story has a happy ending.
As she put it, “Asha definitely saved the koala’s life by keeping him warm. He would have died out there if left alone all night. The poor thing could have been taken by a fox or something too.”
