Puppies being born is an event that’s full of surprises. Veterinarians can give a pretty good estimate of how many pups to expect, but sex and color are going to be a surprise no matter what.
But usually, you can assume that they won’t come in just any color of the rainbow.
When the Stamey family in North Carolina helped their German Shepherd give birth, they thought they were ready for anything.

Gypsy is a white German Shepherd, so the biggest question concerned how many of her litter would be pale like she is.
But when the fourth of an eventual eight puppies revealed itself, it was a bright lime green!
Since he was green and apparently a hungry, grumpy pup, they named him “Hulk.”

There’s no need to worry, though, since Hulk is completely healthy and the color has a natural, if strange, source.
The color is from meconium in the womb staining their fur.

It’s actually pretty common, but you only really see the color on white puppies because darker browns mask it.
Meconium is basically the puppy’s first poops before they are born, so enjoy that mental image.
Mama dogs will lick most of the birthing gunk off their pups right away.

The staining takes a bit to fade completely. After a few days, Hulk has already gone from true green to a greenish yellow.
But even if the color fades, he’ll always have his name to remind everyone of his unique story.
