Back into the world of Game Of Thrones we dive, what treasures shall we find?
A theory of which we know a lot? Or perhaps… some racist plot? Keep reading to find out.
Alright, so here’s your spoiler warning.
Just so we’re clear, there are going to be spoilers for Season 8, Episode 4 of the greatest HBO show in like 10 years.
Except maybe Ja’mie: Private School Girl , that was a good one.
They’re gone now, so we can talk.
The fourth episode, ‘The Last Of The Starks’, has been divisive amongst fans. Some like it fine, some like it not at all and some like it hot. Or maybe that’s just Marilyn Monroe.
But some think the episode was… problematic.
Apparently… the show was being racist. That’s a huge thing to lay on a TV series, especially in this day and age. However, they might have a good reason for it.
Let’s go back to the episode.
We get closure for some dead characters, we discover there was a Starbucks in Winterfell and we get to see some Greyjoy ships doing what they do best. Destroy other ships.
And, we saw a pretty sad death.
Missandei of Naath was slaughtered by the Mountain.
And all so that Cersei could make a point. Hold back your tears, dear reader, we must all get through this together.
People were devastated.
One fan tweeted : “Cersei didn’t get a single tear out of Missandei. She has been through so much only to be killed this way. Nobody come near me I’m so sad.”
And people even called out the potential racism.
Another fan tweeted : “Missandei’s story is what happens when the writers cannot imagine a world where Black characters are fully developed so…not surprised.”
More and more people chimed in.
Another fan went on to say : “The saddest thing about Missandei’s death is that now Gray Worm cannot take her to the islands of Naath as he had promised” Aw… that’s… so sad.

Some have even gone hateful on the creators.
They’ve commented on her chains, the fact that she was a former slave, all pretty problematic situations to put a black character into. And they’re blaming the creators, who are two white guys.
They kind of have a point.
She was killed off pretty quickly and having a black character as a slave does seem pretty old fashioned.
And having so little African-American characters, killing one so unceremoniously is pretty lame.
Others think that people are overreacting.
People think that fans should be used to losing some of their favorite characters, I mean it is Game Of Thrones after all. We lose characters all the time.
And speaking of black characters.
Who remembers Xaro Xhoan Daxos? He was an established merchant who controlled the city of Qarth! Sure, he got locked in a vault, but it was because he was being a… well, jerk.
These people might have a point too.
Like I said, it is, in fact, the show that kills off characters left, right and center. I mean, remember how cool Robb Stark was? Sure you do, he was one of the best.
I dunno.
In a world more divided than ever, we should do our best to come together over things we can enjoy.
