Wendy Duan, a 28-year-old school teacher, wanted to “live life to the fullest” but her life was unexpectedly cut short by a guy she met on a dating app. The Sugar Land shooting made news and broke the hearts of many who sympathized with the victim. She was a popular and beloved assistant elementary teacher who has been with Alief ISD since 2017. Duan had so many wonderful dreams and plans for her future.
Killed Outside Her Home

On January 7, police responded to reports of a shooting incident at a residence on Oxford Mills Lane in Sugarland, Texas.
Multiple Gun Shot Wounds

Duan was found dead in her own backyard with multiple gunshot wounds. According to the police, it looks to be an incident of domestic violence.
The Alleged Killer

Police arrested suspect Charvas Thompson, 26, a couple of days after the shooting incident happened.
His License Plate Was Caught On Cam

“Detectives quickly identified Thompson after interviewing witnesses at the scene, reviewing nearby video and confirming his vehicle from license plate recognition cameras in the area.” says the Sugar Land Texas Police Department in their Facebook update.
They Just Started Dating
According to their investigation, Duan and Thompson had started dating just a week before she was murdered in her backyard.
There Was An Argument Before The Shooting

The police found out from witnesses that there was an argument that happened, which led to the shooting. The suspect drove away in his vehicle, leaving Duan lying on the ground.
They Met On A Dating App

The two met on a dating app “MeetMe,” according to Duan’s mom, who was opposed to their relationship from the start.
Her Mom Tried To Warn Her
“‘She showed me the picture. I don’t know his name. She said, ‘do you like him?’ I said ‘no,'” the mom said. She tried to warn Duan about the dangers of meeting strangers online but failed to change her mind.
“The Guy Is Very Evil”
“‘It’s unbelievable. The guy is very evil. He took her life away. I hope this guy gets the full legal punishment,'” the mom continued.
The Shooter Is Arrested

On early Sunday morning, an arrest warrant was issued by the police, charging Thompson with murder and setting his bond at $500,000.
The Community Is Grieving
Fellow teachers, friends, and family are shocked to hear the news of Duan’s sudden death. The community is grieving and has been speaking up about their fond memories of the late teacher.
Her Neighbors Are Heartbroken
“It’s very sad about that because she’s very young and vibrant,” Saly Thomas, Duan’s neighbor said. “It’s very sad. We’re all very sad about it.”

One friend on Facebook made a heartfelt post for Duan, calling her a “force of light.”
“I didn’t know Wendy Duan very much, but the small moments I spent with her she was a force of light. You can just tell…She was and still loved by many people. & my heart breaks that she lost her life. No one deserves that.”
