Diddy’s lawyer just quit — less than three months before his big trial. Anthony Ricco, who had been part of the rapper’s legal team, has made the decision to step down and dropped a statement that caught a lot of attention.
Diddy’s lawyer unexpectedly quits his legal team
In his motion to withdraw as Combs‘ attorney, Ricco made it clear: “On September 22, 2024, I was retained by the defendant, Sean Combs, to serve as his counsel, and I have served as his counsel since that time.”
He continued, “For the reasons set forth below, this motion for withdrawal is filed so that Sean Combs may move forward with his defense and to commence jury selection and trial without any delay.”
Ricco and Combs’ lead counsel agreed on the withdrawal
Ricco explained that after discussing things with Combs’ lead attorney, Marc Agnifilo, they both agreed he should step down.
Ricco cites attorney-client privilege for limited disclosure
Adding: “While I am aware that the Local Rule requires that an application for withdrawal of counsel is supported and granted ‘only upon a showing by affidavit or otherwise of satisfactory reasons for withdrawal,’ there are sufficient reasons (related to the protections afforded by the attorney/client privilege) for brevity in my application for withdrawal as counsel in this case.”
Ricco insists he can no longer effectively serve as counsel
He went on, “Although I have provided Sean Combs with the high level of legal representation expected by the court, under no circumstances can I continue to effectively serve as counsel for Sean Combs, consistent with the ABA Standards for Criminal Justice.”
Ricco assures the withdrawal will not cause trial delays
“This motion for withdrawal of counsel, if granted, will not result in a delay of the present schedule for the commencement of jury selection and trial, or the present schedules for briefing of pre-trial legal issues. As a result, there will be no lapse in representation, as Sean Combs will continue to be represented by five other attorneys of record.”
Diddy was indicted following his Manhattan hotel arrest

This all comes after Diddy was indicted by a grand jury following his arrest at the Park Hyatt hotel in Manhattan back in September.
Combs faces serious charges of racketeering and s*x trafficking
He’s facing some heavy charges, including racketeering and s*x trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion — charges he’s repeatedly denied.
Indictment details accusations of coercion and threats
The indictment lays out some disturbing accusations. It claims that Combs and others in his circle “wield[ed] the power and prestige of Combs’ role at the Combs Business to intimidate, threaten and lure female victims into Combs’ orbit, often under the pretense of a romantic relationship.”
It also states that, with the “assistance of members and associates,” Combs “transported commercial s*x workers across state lines and internationally” and “then used force, threats of force, and coercion, to cause victims to engage in extended s*x acts with male commercial s*x workers that Combs referred to as, among other things, ‘freak-offs.'”
Combs’ legal team continues as trial preparations proceed
Right now, there’s no expectation that Combs’ trial will be delayed. He remains in jail, waiting for his trial date, which is set for May 5.
More updates to come.
