The story of a daughter becoming furious with her father after her father refuses to kick her ex-boyfriend out of the house during the lockdown has been going viral across the internet, and dividing public opinion on the way!
Lockdown has not been easy for couples.
No matter how much you know your partner, being cooped up in the house with them for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with little to no contact with other people can be a uniquely challenging experience.
Many couples have already been feeling the strain.
Not only living with someone, but also not seeing anyone else but that person, for an extended period of time can be difficult, and a lot of pieces have been written about how to cope if you and your partner are struggling through this difficult period.

However, for some couples, the situation has proven too much.
One relationship which ended led to quite the family dispute.
One distressed father, using the username u/VeryCornfused, recently took to Reddit’s AITA [Am I The Asshole] subreddit to ask for help regarding his family’s trouble stemming from his daughter’s relationship trouble.
The father opened his query uneasily, by writing, “Hello all, I’ve found myself in a bit of a sticky situation amidst everything going on in the world.”
He explained that his daughter recently moved back from college, with her boyfriend in tow.
“My daughter (19) moved back in from college and asked if her high-school boyfriend (18) could move back into the house. His Mother is immunocompromised and also probably abusive (no father in the picture),” he wrote.
The father had also managed to convince his wife to agree despite his initial trepidation, “Reluctant, but convinced by my wife, I decided to let him sleep in the guest room for the time being.”
His daughter’s boyfriend turned out to be a model house guest.
“He’s been very well behaved, makes his bed every day, is very polite, does chores around the house and tries to pay us back for every little thing. He even cut my younger son’s hair (he worked part-time at a barbershop) and plays sports / hangs out with them.”
However, the father then revealed that things recently took quite a turn:
“Fast forward four weeks later, and apparently, he and my daughter had a big fight Saturday night and broke up. I think they’ve just seen a little too much of each other recently as they’ve been the only people they’ve really interacted with and been hanging out at least 10 hours every day.”
The daughter then demanded that her boyfriend be kicked out.
Despite the fact that they had broken up, however, the father was not determined to kick the boy out. This ultimately led to quite a lot of tension:
“My daughter came to me sobbing and asking me to kick him out of the house because she couldn’t stand being cooped up with him because she was heartbroken. I talked to him about it and he said he doesn’t have anywhere else to go (his mother is his only relative locally) and he begged me to not kick him out.”
The ex and the father ultimately came to a compromise, as he explained, “To compromise, I told him he could sleep in our pool house, a completely separate building, for the time being.”
However, not even the father’s wife has agreed with his decision to keep the ex around.
The father’s wife was apparently “furious” that he would take this boy’s side over that of her daughter’s. Also, she claimed that t was absurd for him to take a random kid into their house.
The father emotionally explained that he was simply trying to look out for the kid. Writing, “I responded that I wasn’t picking a side. I just feel I have a responsibility to make sure this kid had a stable roof over his head. She said my daughter is just crushed to even see him and hear him playing with my son.”
The father finally explained that he didn’t see the problem as his daughter would be seeing pictures of him anyway!
Yes, in a slightly bizarre closing statement, the father wrote, “My view is that she would be looking at pictures/reminded of him even if he was in the house, and there’s no real good reason to kick him out.”
I don’t know whether it’s just me but there is a massive difference between seeing a picture of your ex by chance, and physically having them in your house?
The father also since posted an update to explain that he knew the boy’s father from high-school and that the father was a “real piece of work”, before asking the internet if he was the asshole in the situation.
The internet was ultimately almost unanimously on the side of the father.
The father was ultimately dubbed “Not the asshole” in the situation. A lot of people pointed out that it would be incredibly cruel to kick out the boy at present, with the majority of peoples scolding the daughter for her selfishness.

“He can’t really just bounce from your place to his mother’s, especially now. Your wife and daughter begged you to let him live with you, so you did. Unless he was dangerous or something, it would be absolutely horrible of you to kick him out in the middle of a pandemic knowing he has nowhere to go.”
“Your daughter sounds like a very selfish person if she’d rather see him on the street or in an abusive situation than be reminded he exists. I couldn’t imagine ever hating someone that much. […] She’s an adult and needs to learn to live with her decisions.”
Whose side do you land on in this story?
Personally, I can’t see how anyone could kick someone out during the current climate, it would be incredibly heartless. A lot of people end up living with their ex for a period of time after a break-up, so it feels like the daughter is simply learning quite a hard truth about life, no matter how difficult it might be for her.
