As a woman, you may oftentimes have your physical appearance scrutinized . People will tell you what you should wear , and what you should avoid wearing if you don’t want the “wrong kind of attention.”
For one dad, though, that kind of criticism just won’t do. And he took to TikTok to express how angry he is at the people who insulted his daughters.
Matt Austin is a Florida news anchor.
He has a pretty active Facebook page , where he posts about his job as well as his family. Matt also happens to be on TikTok ( @flnewsman ) where he boasts a pretty modest following.
On October 8th, Matt posted about his two teenaged daughters, who were attending their school’s homecoming.
“My daughters look a little too good on homecoming night. Believe it or not, they’re even more beautiful on the inside,” he wrote in his caption.
Though the post was innocent enough, a lot of commenters began criticizing what the daughters were wearing.
People came out of the woodwork to make sure Matt knew how poorly his daughters were dressed. One commenter thought it was bad parenting to let them go out “with everything showing.” Another though they should “have respect for themselves.”
The comments angered Matt to the point where he decided to respond.
In a TikTok of his own, Matt responded to the users’ negative comments.
“So I put up what I thought was a pretty innocuous post about my daughters looking beautiful for homecoming. But you would be shocked by some of the comments,” he begins the video.
After showing and reading some of the comments, he begins to clap back.
Matt expresses how frustrating it is for girls to be taught not to dress in a way where they could be “distracting boys” or “asking for it.”
“It’s not my daughter’s job to make sure your son is focused in school,” Matt says. “Also not her job to dress hideous enough where your son doesn’t assault her.”
While he admits he wasn’t a fan of what his daughters chose to wear, he also wouldn’t stop them from wearing the dresses.
He says that if he starts telling his daughters what to wear, he’ll be teaching them three things: “A: they’ll start to hate me for arbitrary rules. B: They’ll start to lie to me. Or C: That it’s okay for a man to tell them what to wear because they look too good.”
The TikTok went absolutely viral.
Since posting the TikTok on October 11th, it’s gained over 5.3 million views. Plenty of commenters joined in to make sure Matt knew he was doing a good job, both with the video, and with parenting.
The commenters thanked Matt for his amazing response.
One user wrote, “Thank you! You are an amazing dad raising amazing strong girls.. it’s rough out here for us females….”
Another commented, “I think they look fabulous and not going to lie I’d love to know where your daughter bought her black dress.”
A lot of people pointed out that what they were wearing wasn’t even inappropriate.
“These are such normal outfits for homecoming too,” a user weighed in.
Another said, “This is how just about everyone dresses.”
Matt later posted another TikTok, thanking everyone for the kind response to his previous one.
“I got freaked out thinking I’m gonna embarrass my daughters all over again,” he said.
“When I went into the comment section I found thousands of you telling my daughters how beautiful they are… Also thousands more said I’m a good dad. And we might not know each other, but that’s pretty much the best compliment you could ever give me.”
