Although it’s been easy to have a dim view of humanity over the last year or two, we can often see evidence that most of us are trying to do the right thing and can show some inspiring generosity.
Although there are some nightmarish systemic implications behind the fact that a third of every GoFundMe campaign is intended to cover medical costs, it’s nonetheless staggering that so many are willing to put up that kind of money. But with so many problems gripping the world right now, it can be difficult for certain issues to stand out from the pack.
And that’s likely the reason behind recent stunts that get into people’s hearts through their senses of humor rather than just aiming at their compassion. And while the inside jokes of certain communities can balloon into that kind of positive impact, one man’s approach was a little more universal.
Last year, Luben Lopez of Chicago felt compelled to raise money and awareness in the wake of an ongoing humanitarian crisis gripping Yemen.
According to the Council on Foreign Relations , the nation is in the midst of a civil war that is creating arguably the worst humanitarian crisis in the world due to the widespread hunger, disease, and civilian casualties emerging as consequences of the conflict.
As Lopez tweeted out, his efforts would benefit the Yemen Relief and Reconstruction Foundation.
But while it’s hard to imagine a more dire situation than the one he’s trying to address, Lopez would end up finding a downright silly way to raise its profile.
As UPI reported , this involved riding his bike from P*o P*o Point, Washington to Pee Pee Creek, Ohio.
In a clip obtained by NPR, Lopez said, “No one has ever gone from P*o P*o to Pee Pee. There is no better opportunity to do something with my sense of humor and bring awareness.”
But before we get into his journey, you may be wondering why anyone named these places like this in the first place.
According to NPR, neither of them were intentionally named bodily functions as P*o P*o Point was apparently named for the steam whistle noises often heard in the area back when it was a big region for logging.
As for Pee Pee Creek’s giggle-worthy name, that was a reference to its first settler, who carved his initials (P.P.) into a tree soon after he arrived.
But while Lopez may have planned his awareness campaign around a joke, his journey would take some serious effort to complete.
As we can see, one would have to travel over 2,500 miles to get from P*o P*o Point to Pee Pee Creek and that’s especially daunting when you’re planning to do the whole thing on a bike.
And while it might seem like it would take nearly nine days to do this, Lopez would end up taking about 36 days to pull into Pee Pee Creek.
As UPI reported, that was because he travelled exactly 69 miles per day for the sake of the meme.
Nonetheless, Lopez did eventually make it to Pee Pee Creek and shed tears of joy once he came across this sign.
But as the video he posted to Twitter shows, that soon gave way to laughter once the absurdity of what he was crying about dawned on him.
But while NPR stated that his journey took him across nine states and past Shartz Road in Springboro, Ohio, Lopez doesn’t seem to be finished riding yet.
According to UPI, his journey will extend into Canada as he intends to make Pee Pee Island, Newfoundland the final destination for a journey that will end up totalling 5,000 miles.
