There are hundreds, even thousands of communities across the world that have their own specific language, so to speak. Secret symbols and signals, methods of communication that can go unseen by the average person. It’s kind of amazing, when you think about it, how one inconspicuous object can mean something totally different to a whole group of people.
However, that’s usually not something you want to discover by mistake as this couple did during their beach vacation.

Vacationing means relaxing with whoever it is you’re with and making the most out of your time away, unbothered by life back home. Who knows, maybe while you’re on your trip you’ll make a few friends.
For one couple, they unintentionally sent out a signal that they were looking for specific types of ‘friends’ while on their vacation, changing the vibe of the whole trip.
It all began with a TikTok uploaded by user @linjeanw.
The video, which currently has 3.2 million views, and over 150k likes, vaguely describes a story about a vacation she and her husband went on, and how one tiny choice affected them.
The video begins with a current shot of her and some text.
The text reads, “Thinking of wearing matching pineapple bathing suits with my husband on vacation because I thought it was cute.”
The video then changes to some photos of them in those matching pineapple bathing suits, before another batch of on-screen text reads, “People were a little extra nice,” followed by a shrug emoji.
Without further explanation in the video, you might be a little lost. Until you read the caption.
The caption says, “Oops no one told me,” followed by some pineapple emojis, then the hashtags #notswingers, #oops, #pineapples, and #ididntknow.
That’s right, pineapples are a signal for s*****r couples, meaning other swingers were approaching them with, well, offers.
Pineapples have been a symbol for swingers for some time now.
Some discussion in the comments provided further detail. Though it can be location-dependent, pineapple iconography can mean many things in the s*****r community.
Pineapple on the front porch or mailbox can mean a s*****r party is happening at that home, while pineapple print clothing indicates that that couple is into swinging, which is what happened to these two on their vacation.
Many stated that the original secret sign for swingers was an upside down pineapple.
According to the Urban Dictionary page that describes ‘upside down pineapple’, “A pineapple is turned upside down when a person is in search of a s*****r party. Originally it was turned upside down in the individual’s shopping cart. Swingers use this symbol to identify each other in public.” This has expanded to pineapple-themed items in general, especially in lawn and garden decor.
Even though it was unintentional, the signal was still sent to others at the beach that day.
It just goes to show that you truly do learn something new every day, though not always in the way you were expecting. I think this couple will be investing in a different set of matching swimsuits.
