In the wake of the ongoing news regarding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, we continue to find small moments that display the solidarity of Ukrainian citizens and the ways in which they’re banded together in hope .
Like this one clip that was captured by CNN of a group of citizens praying in the middle of a courtyard, a sight that moved one of CNN’s reporters.

CNN chief international correspondent Clarissa Ward spotted a powerful display while in Kharkiv, Ukraine.
During a live broadcast in which she was reporting to CNN’s Don Lemon, instead of the camera being focused on her, it is instead centered on a group of Ukrainian citizens who had gathered in the square behind her to pray.
When Don asks her to share what’s happening, she does so.
“I think this, Don, really speaks to the sort of desperation of this moment,” she says. “We just see a small group of people […] have gathered in the main square, and they are kneeling and praying because right now there is clearly a sense of having no idea what is coming down the pipeline, what is in store for the people of Ukraine.”
She notes that the conditions are already against them.
“It’s freezing cold here, so to see these people kneeling on the cold stone in prayer is honestly very moving,” she said. “And I think it speaks to the state of ordinary Ukrainians here who have done absolutely nothing to deserve this.”
She goes on to say the fear was “very real” within Ukraine.
She reiterates that the citizens themselves have no quarrel with Russia, and have no desire for war.
“I think that’s why you’re seeing those people … getting to their knees and praying,” she says.
