Look, I’m a simple gal. I don’t need fine dining to make me happy — I will take a burger, fries, and a milkshake over some fancy, schmancy meal any day. There is nothing like a grilled cheeseburger with all the fixings: lettuce, tomato, red onion, mayo, and of course, lots of cheese.
If you can believe it, there is a way to make a perfect burger even more perfect and I’m about to tell you how.
There are few foods as perfect as a hamburger.
It’s something that can fix a late-night craving after a few too many spiked seltzers and be the perfect, family-friendly BBQ food.
There’s a reason it’s the national food of this great nation!
However, what if I were to tell you that the way we’ve all been eating burgers is *all wrong*?
I think it’s safe to say most of us eat our burgers the “traditional” way — with the fluffy, crown of the bun on top. Maybe, if I’m feeling fancy, I’ll cut it in half, but that’s as elaborate as I’m getting.
Now, this “traditional” way is being debunked by a series of self-proclaimed burger experts.
As it turns out, the fluffy crown is actually meant to be the bottom bun — to soak up all the meaty goodness!
Simon Dukes, founder of Burger Lad, told Insider that “burgers are served the way they are purely for aesthetics.”
“The crown (the top of the bun) is generally thicker (and therefore stronger) than the heel, so for a better eating experience, you should actually flip it upside-down to eat it,” Simon explained.
“A true burger connoisseur should always eat their burgers upside down.”
This non-traditional technique was backed up by popular chain resturant TGI Friday’s, who introduced the “flip it” challenge to their customers which encouraged them to eat burgers the “best way.”
“According to our experts, the best way to eat a burger is to flip it upside down. The thicker top bun soaks up the burger juices, helping keep that flavour in for longer,” the restaurant wrote in an Instagram post.
Would I feel confident enough to flip my burger in public? Maybe. Will I do it the next time I grill one up in my own backyard? Absolutely!
