It seems that no matter who you are or what species you’re from, you never really know how your kids will turn out.
And while human parents might worry about what crowd their kids will fall into just as a wolf might worry whether her pups will be good at hunting, that’s not what I mean.
Instead, we’re talking about how unpredictable birth can be as it’s not unheard of for people to not even know they’re pregnant until it’s time to go into labor. Even more astonishing is the fact that it’s not even impossible for a surrogate to become pregnant with her own baby while carrying someone else’s.
But rare births with uncanny results are just as possible among the animal kingdom and while some of them can have grim implications for a fledgling creature, others like the phenomenon we’re about to discuss today just make for an interesting spectacle.
On January 27, a bulldog in Nova Scotia, Canada named Freya gave birth to a litter of puppies.

People reported that all seven of them turned out to be healthy, but we can already see that one of them stands out from the others.
This was true while that puppy was being born as well, which made owners Trevor Mosher and Audra Rhys worried that she was in peril.
That’s because she was surrounded by a black amniotic sac when she was born, as opposed to the translucent sacs her siblings came in.

But since she moved and made noise just like the others, the couple wouldn’t know what was so special about her until they cleaned her off and noticed her fur was bright green.
Naturally, Mosher and Rhys had some questions upon making this discovery.
In mosher’s words, “So we googled it, ‘my puppy is green, what’s wrong,’ and apparently it is very rare, and it has happened a few times all over the world.”

As for why this happens at all, a similar story from Today revealed that puppies who would normally have fur in pale colors can turn green when they’re exposed to a pigment called biliverdin while in the womb.
If you’ve ever noticed a bruise on your skin that looks a little green, that bruise had the same pigment at work.
Once the couple realized that their puppy was perfectly healthy, they decided to name her Fiona after the Shrek character.

But if you’re one of the rare folks who ends up with a similarly green puppy in your life, it may interest and slightly disappoint you to know that they don’t stay like that forever.
Indeed, in the weeks since she’s been born, Fiona has already started to lose her unique color and is more of a “light lime green” now. As the weeks roll on, she’ll likely start looking more like her siblings.
