The story of one young man stepping up to take his father’s place when the time came has been sweeping the internet, leaving teary-eyed faces in its wake.
School can be a challenging time for kids.
Sure, a lot of us look back on our time in school and wish to have those days back when we could play freely with wild abandon.
However, for a lot of children at that age, there are a lot of things that can prove incredibly challenging.
One of those things is being let down by close family members.
Being let down by a close family member as a child is a uniquely crushing experience and one that can have a surprisingly long-lasting impact on a child’s life.
Young Skylar Hamerter had been looking forward to the father-daughter dance for months.
7-year-old Skylar from Covington, Georgia had been extremely excited about going to her school’s father-daughter dance.
Skylar’s mother explained that in the months leading up to the dance, Skylar had said to her, “Mommy, I want my dad to come with me to the dance. I don’t want grandpa. I want my dad, I want everyone to know I have a dad,” in an interview with Today .
However, Skylar’s father stood her up on the day.
Skylar’s mother initially thought that there was no way Skylar’s father would let his daughter down.
However, Ms. Hamerter began to suspect that Skylar’s father may not turn up in the days leading up to the dance, as he had stopped answering any of her calls.
This was also not the first time that Skylar had been let down for this dance.
Skylar’s father had also let her down at the last father-daughter dance! In a heartbreaking Facebook post written by Skylar’s mother, Trelysia Hamerter, Ms. Hamerter wrote:
“This is the 2nd year that my daughter’s father stood her up for the Daddy/ daughter dance. She cried because she had her heart set on going. I felt so bad because there was nothing I could do because I’m not a male.”
However, Skylar’s brother stepped in to take his place.
Ms. Hamerter said that Skylar’s brother saw her crying and asked him, mother, what was wrong. When his mother explained the situation, 11-year-old Christian told his mother:
“If he doesn’t show, mom, I’d like to take Skylar to the dance… she deserves to know that a man can keep his word and that she’s really special,” Ms. Hamerter told Today .
Ms. Hamerter was incredibly proud of her son’s actions.
And why wouldn’t she be? In her Facebook post, she also wrote, “y’all I literally cried”, and wrote of her son:
“Just know that I’m raising someone a GREAT HUSBAND one day.”
Ms. Hamerter’s post has since gone viral.
Since it was posted, the post detailing young Christian’s wonderful actions has received over 50, 000 shares, and over 100, 000 likes! With people taking to the comments to write the likes of:
“Beautiful children and such a loving brother. You’re definitely an awesome mom and doing a great job with your babies.”
“Good job mom! He’s an awesome big brother and son, and one day he’s gonna make a great husband! All because of you!”
“That’s what brothers do. and much love to All Big Brothers.”
The pair apparently had a wonderful time at the dance!
Kids can get a bad rap in the media nowadays. However, this goes to show that there are young people out there who are capable of showing us adults a thing or two about loving one another and having respect for our family members!
Let me know in the comments if this story affected you as much as it did me.
