The Hills: New Beginnings premiered Monday night, providing everything our former tween hearts needed and more.
There was a new remix of “Unwritten” to bop to, endless drama, and even some new faces, like Mischa Barton.
One thing we didn’t need, however, was Brody Jenner misgendering Caitlyn Jenner not once, but twice, throughout the episode.
As you can guess, fans were not happy.
After nine long, miserable years without it, “The Hills” premiered its new reboot this past Monday night.
The reboot, titled The Hills: New Beginnings chronicles the lives of our favorite gang again.
This includes Audrina Partridge, Spencer and Heidi Pratt, and yes, Justin Bobby — plus more!
While Lauren Conrad won’t be part of the show, you will recognize a new face: Mischa Barton.
The former OC star is ready to step back in the limelight.
She reportedly hung around the same Hollywood circles as some of the cast, so it should be a natural fit to have her part of the crew.
The cast also includes Brody Jenner since he played a big role on the original series.
If you remember, he was basically the leader of the bros on the show.
He was also often the root of some relationship drama as he was involved with both Lauren Conrad and Kristin Cavallari.
Brody is no stranger to reality TV shows.
Since he’s the half-brother to the Jenner sisters, Kendall and Kylie, he’s appeared in a few episodes of their hit show, Keeping Up With The Kardashians .
So since Brody is intermixed with both ‘The Hills’ and his Jenner fam, some subjects came up.
Including the subject of Caitlyn Jenner.
Since Caitlyn wasn’t a big part of Brody’s life growing up, the two have a strained relationship.
A lot of this had to do with Caitlyn’s past struggles with her gender identity.
Caitlyn knows that’s not an excuse.
In an interview with Diane Sawyer , Caitlyn said, “There’s no excuse for not being a good parent, no matter how many problems that you have. No excuse for that.” Caitlyn touched on her strained relationship with her children, saying, “Some [of my children] I have remained very close to,. A couple of them… I’m a little more distant.”
Caitlyn claimed that the “Jenners call more,” but knows that everyone is busy.
“I have to admit, I’ll sit here and wonder, ‘Is it because of my transitioning? Or is it because their life is so busy that they don’t call, like, all the time?’” Caitlyn said.
It didn’t help matters when Caitlyn skipped Brody’s wedding for a business event.
Brody was reportedly ” deeply hurt ” by the news that Caitlyn had chosen a charity event over his wedding to Kaitlynn Carter.
While we’re not sure why Brody misgendered Caitlyn on “The Hills: New Beginnings,” all we know is that it happened.
On two separate occasions. Ay yi yi, Brody.
Both times happened while he was talking to his buddy, Frankie.
“My dad, he also became a woman — don’t want to forget about that one. I had been dating Kaitlynn Carter for four and a half years,” he began.
“And my dad came out and said that he wanted to be called Caitlyn.”
He continued: “Two Caitlyns. Look man, it’s a wild world we live in out there, you know?”
Brody mentioned he has low expectations for Caitlyn.
Brody continued by saying Caitlyn is “like a 15 year old girl now. It’s awesome, she’s great, she’s happy, she’s off living her life, so what I’ve learned is to not expect too much from her.”
It’s fair to mention that both Kylie and Kendall have called Caitlyn “Dad” before.
Caitlyn was reportedly relaxed about gender pronouns soon after she transitioned.
However, there are actually guidelines that state that a transgendered person should not be misgendered, whether past or present.
Last year both Kendall and Kylie came under fire for their Father’s Day posts on Instagram.
When Kylie shared this montage of photos of herself and Caitlyn for Father’s Day, she was criticized for only using pre-transition photos of Caitlyn.
Kendall faced a similar issue.
However, most of their criticism came from people concerned about whether it was appropriate for them to be referring to Caitlyn as their father or celebrating her on Father’s Day at all.
But the concern was misplaced.
Caitlyn has been very clear that she’s fine with her children still referring to her as “dad.” In fact, in an interview with Andy Cohen, Caitlyn said, “I tell them to call me Dad.”
Brody’s older brother Brandon also backed up that claim.
In an interview with Channel Q Radio , Brandon Jenner said that, “”Accidents happen and people slip up and you shouldn’t shame them for it.” Brandon also said that Caitlyn told them all they could still refer to her as “Dad,” telling them, “There’s a part of me that relates to being your father at one point in my life.”
Brandon also claimed that people should be more understanding of slip ups.
Brandon said that people should “teach through encouragement” instead of “tearing somebody down. I do that even with my family — when my brothers and sisters slip up here and there — I do encourage them to use the pronoun that my dad would prefer,” he said.
Fans were *not* happy with Brody and wasted no time in airing out their frustration.
Other fans were saying that Brody was throwing shade with what he did.
Brody definitely took the heat off the craziness that is Spencer and Heidi Pratt.
The fans did not hold back.
Brody has yet to comment on the controversy.
Caitlyn Jenner will not appear on this new season of the show.
We still have hope that Brody will learn and grow from this.
As for what’s to come for the rest of this season, the rest is still unwritten.
Be sure to tune in Monday nights!
