Two teachers in Ohio died last week in a crash as they were headed to North Carolina to drop their oldest son off at college.
The incident took place on August 15
Authorities said that the two teachers lost their lives and their two younger kids barely survived after the crash occurred.
It was on Friday, August 15, at around 1:18 p.m. when 55-year-old Donald Nunney was going east on Interstate 40 near Chapel Hill when his car “ran off the right side of the roadway … [and] struck several small trees,” per North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
The car tumbled down
Nunney’s Honda Odyssey “traveled down an embankment and collided with a large tree,” said the spokesperson for North Carolina State Highway Patrol, per People.
Further details on what might’ve caused the crash have yet to emerge as it’s still under investigation.
The kids lost their parents

Sadly, both Nunney, 55, and his wife, Maria Galindo Nunney, 50, were killed in the car crash.
The highway patrol spokesperson said a 9-year-old and a 15-year-old in the minivan were hospitalized with serious injuries. They were later identified in the Galindo family’s fundraiser as the Nunneys’ son Leo and daughter Lucia.
Their oldest son was in a different vehicle
CBS affiliate WOIO reported that the family had been in North Carolina dropping off their oldest son, 19-year-old Noah, to the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
He was in a different vehicle and pulled over onto the side of the highway when the crash happened.
Witnesses on campus saw the crash
Investigators further informed the outlet that the family had been close to the college campus when witnesses saw the minivan crash.
Maria’s brother, Sandro Galindo, told WNCN that the family had been headed to lunch at the time of the crash.
The surviving children are mourning their parents

A GoFundMe page set up to support the family, which also includes 18-year-old Diego, said that the two youngest children are ‘healing from major trauma and injuries.’
Sgt. Tyler Tucker with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol told WOIO that Noah has been comforting his siblings at the hospital, saying, “their entire world has changed.”
The parents were beloved teachers
The late parents were both teachers at the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, per the outlet.
Donald and Maria were dubbed by the GoFundMe’s organizers as ‘amazing and loving parents’ who were devoted to their family and their students.
