Read on, viewer, and see the odd world that George R.R. Martin originally wanted to create for some of our favorite Game Of Thrones characters.
But honestly, what would you expect from the master of subverting expectations?
Ahh, what a good time we’ve had with “Game Of Thrones”.

Incest, violence, dragons, a little more incest, it’s been a wild ride.
We’ve had our expectations blown up and then those pieces blew up again.
And that’s in part thanks to George R.R. Martin’s writing.

Well, a lot of it is thanks to him. He did create the series after all, and it’s his genius alongside the T.V. writers that’s made the series so much fun.
However, did you know that things could’ve been a lot different?

Apparently, George R.R. Martin had a very… uh… unfamiliar idea for his original trilogy.
And trust me when I say it’s totally unfamiliar. Like same characters but much, much weirder.
In 1993, GRRM sent a pitch letter about what he intended to be three books

This letter has been kicking around the web for a while, and you should totally read it if you’re a Game Of Thrones fan. It’s a cool outline of what could have been.
Sure, the themes are the same however the plot is very different.

Time makes fools of us all, and obviously, the TV writers and George R. R. Martin changed their minds since 1993. And thank goodness, because Game Of Thrones would’ve been much weirder if we were left with what he had back then.
Today, we’re going to look through some of those old details.

Obviously, you could read the letter for yourself, but the pictures are kind of glossy and I have such an awesome way with words, why wouldn’t you want to hear it from me?
The first book is mostly the same.

It focuses on the Starks vs. The Lannisters, which is still pretty awesome.
Jaime and Ned still have their little confrontation, Arya and Joffrey are still at each other’s throats. Same old good stuff.
The second part was supposed focus on something different too.

Daenerys Targaryen and the Dothraki were supposed to invade Westeros here, which would’ve been so awesome.
Well, that was the plan , until Dany learns that Khal Drogo didn’t really care about invasion, and also when he offhandedly kills her brother.
That part happens in the ‘Game of Thrones’ we know and love, but it plays out a bit differently.

Instead of being actively involved and rightfully in favor of Viserys’ execution, Daenerys would vow revenge on Khal Drogo and eventually murder him.
Nooo, Dany! Not your sun and stars!
And the third part, well, that should be pretty familiar.

It was supposed to focus on the war with the White Walkers.
Which, as we speak, is happening right now. Battle of Winterfell baby, no spoilers, but it’s super dope.
He also said there would be five key players that survived to the end.

Tyrion, Daenerys, Arya, Bran, and Jon Snow.
Looks pretty familiar, but we’re missing Sansa. Well, she was supposed to give Joffrey a child and then betray the Starks then join the Lannisters.
Tyrion was supposed to siege Winterfell.

And Catelyn was supposed to escape with Bran and Arya to the Wall, where Jon was supposed to reject them because of the Night’s Watch’s rules.
This causes a rift between Jon and Bran, but not between Jon and Arya.
Speaking of Arya, her story was much, much different.

Get ready for a doozy.
Even though she makes it through until the end still, she’s got a lot more lovers in GRRM’s original version. Oh yeah, super weird.
First off, her and Jon were supposed to fall in love.

Oh yeah, believe it. And you thought the sex scene with Gendry was weird.
Apparently, their passion would torment them, until Jon’s true parentage would be revealed.
That plot point has lead some people to believe the story might still make the show…
But with Sansa falling in love with Jon instead of Arya. Still a liiiiittle too incest-y for my tastes, but that’s right on course for GoT.
Next, Tyrion was supposed to dethrone Jofferey.

But then get usurped by Jaime. Cersei didn’t exist yet in this draft, so Jaime was kind of two people in one.
Then Tyrion would join the Starks, and guess what?
He would ALSO fall in love with Arya!
His love would be unrequited, but be a huge source of tension for Tyrion and Jon.
Yeah, you read that right. There would’ve been a Jon/Arya/Tyrion love triangle.
Some people think, AGAIN, that Arya might end up replaced with Sansa for this storyline.

Which would explain their almost-sweet moment down in the crypts in the last episode. That would be… one way to join the Stark and Lannister houses.
What did you think of Arya’s original plot line?

Better than what we got? Worse?
What would you have done? I’ve got loads and loads of fan fiction… er, I mean, I’m just a regular non-obsessed fan!
